They jump at you everyday … !
Sometimes they are right , often they are wrong . Sometimes – they appear when you would rather hear ‘sweet nothings’ from your sweetheart. They can be tedious , hateful , fictitious and arrogant – all in one sentence . They are the people who cover sports in Montreal and why should they be exempt from a report card at the end of a season ?
Here are a few of these fancy folks and what they do or do not bring to the ears of Montrealers ..
If you have not had the opportunity to sit down and enjoy a beer with a Montreal sports personality – Mitch is the one that you should pick . His love of sports , music , women and beverages is clear from the get – go . Opinionated , optimistic , highly critical when need be – Melnick provides a boost to the Montreal sports scene. A well-rounded ‘voice ‘ whose patience nears perfection when dealing with the emotional rants of the hockey G.M ‘s in the city .Hey , how can you not love a guy who is friends with Bill ‘ the Spaceman ‘ Lee , loves Bob Dylan and Hunter S. Thompson …
The king of the armchair ! A self – processed ‘ living the dream ‘ so – called hockey man who will stop at nothing to further his career as a sports personality. If a paper boy informs him that the Montreal Canadiens have made a trade – in Tony’s mind … It must be true ! A spreader of gossip , a dropper of names and a man whose hockey sense is so far off the ice surface – it is a wonder he maintains such a high slot at TSN radio . They say sex sells – thank the lord Tony is no George Clooney ; we would all be in trouble then …
Everyone adores a Teddy Bear and Tieman is just that in the minds of many Montrealers. Randy has been a mainstay on the radio and television for many years in the city. He has earned the respect and adulation of everyone with his ‘ aw – shucks ‘ personality and his ability to decipher a certain moral code in his viewings. Think of the Saturday Night Live skit with ‘ da bears ‘ and you think of Tieman. A man who you would like to have as a friend …
Shaun Starr and Elliot Price
The morning guys on 990 deserve credit for waking up early and being able to talk about hockey before most have had a daily shot of Tequila. Generic and insightful are the words that come to mind when describing the pair of early birds. A playback of TSN ‘s Sportsdesk would basically do the same job and save the station lots of money . These guys must love sports to wake up and barely be remembered by lunchtime ! Kudos for being nice guys … The anti – Marinaros should be moved into Tony ‘s slot and leave the latter for the early birds to forget …
Paul is an occasional sportscaster on CTV and the news director at K103 radio. Professional to the utmost – Graif brings an element of trust to the sports desk. He is a big – brother type who is aware of his place and places integrity on the top of his list. Seldom opinionated yet his tone shines through when injustice is the fodder of the day.
‘Pretty – Boy ‘ Corbeil is just that. No more – no less. A true talking head. A viewer under the age of ninety knows well that M.Corbeil takes crash courses minutes before his on air appearance. Not saying he does not know sports – saying he does not know sports very well. If he was not hired in true casting couch fashion , a drunken human resource person may have been responsible for giving Corbeil to Montrealers. Just because one played sports – it does not mean they ‘know ‘ sports … C’ mon Andre , just say ” I want to do Lori Graham !” Get it over with …
If there is anyone in Montreal that requires a nap – it just may be Mr. Wilde. An exorbitant amount of energy and passion rules this man as he seemingly speeds from one interview to another. An intelligent hockey man , Brian is always asking the proper questions and injecting the truth in matters gone bad. Through this – he maintains a great sense of humor and displays how lucky he is to hold a job that many would kill for … Go Brian Go !
