Team Canada Shoots Itself against the U.S.A

The Canadian Junior hockey team had a relative easy time advancing to the semi-final game against their cross-continent rivals.

Too easy.

a

The Americans played six games in eight days to gain entry into a game against their arch rivals.. Team Canada, on the other glove,  had a couple of days off. It showed …

The South of the Border boys came out as if they were entering the fourth period against their Quarterfinal foes – the Czechs.  In that game, the Americans outscored Czechoslovakia 7 -0. They were on a roll and that momentum suited up for the first period against the Canadian squad. It was – that obvious …

When a team has a lay-off, in any league from Pee -Wee to Uncle Billy’s Beer Bonanza on Sunday night, they come out flatter than a  girl before puberty. Early Thursday morning, Team Canada was that girl and the Americans were the aggressive older boy. Led by the Montreal Canadiens‘ first round pick – Alex Galchenyuk, the red-white and blew (as in blew up their own citizens) skaters used every move in the book to bypass any defense the pre – teen first period Canadians could muster. The Americans were loose and the Canadians tighter than a wagon filled with Amish virgins ..

End of the first period – Team McCabe 2 Team Subban 0. No low five photos for the Subban clan here folks.

La Deuxieme

It takes two minutes to boil an egg. Apparently, it takes just under three minutes to crack the psyche of a country built on Maple Syrup, Beavers and Hockey supremacy.

Just when it looked like the Northern NHL wannabes had shaken their Russian cobwebs, Team USA‘s Goudreau took advantage of a bad Canadian change and roofed a wrist shot over the shoulder of the Canadian Nation net-minder Subban. If Team Canada was a hot air balloon, the Americans were a heated dart with exemplary precision.

aIf Grandma’s breasts sagged, then Canada’s logo must have been attached as the once perky companions of Grandpa hit the ground – hard. With almost forty minutes left to play, it was not time for Canada to panic. This type of game along with a somewhat deep hole score-wise is dangerous in Junior hockey. Much more than in NHL hockey. These are kids playing on the national stage, not seasoned veterans akin to million dollar contracts and euphorically-priced escorts. Wobble  – and Canada falls down like a Weeble gone bad …

What was that …?

Just past the ten minute mark, it happened. A career Canadian Couch potato’s worse nightmare. Scarier than a Don Cherry dream. Team USA scored again.

Four score and seven minutes left in the second; USA 4 – Team Canada 0. Goalie Subban chased  to the bench regardless of Lincoln’s affinity for the denizens of African descent. Canadian coach Hitchcock, no choice but to yank his net protector like a rotten tooth. A move needed to give his squad a boost, his  goalie a figurehead with a goat’s hide …

La Troisieme

In the words of Elvis Presley: “It’s now or never …”

The only way to go for Canada was up … not away. Away they went …

With almost identical numbers on the scoreboard as Team USA’s third goal in period two, Canada took a too-many-men on the ice penalty. Things seemed bad and they just seemed badder. Then as quick as a Salamander scurries under a rock, hope appeared via the Three Stooges. Okay – one Stooge …

Canadian forward Rattie’s shot from the slot evaded American net-minder Gibson’s shoulder and discovered the crossbar quicker than a Salamand … (never mind). The puck careened to the left of the goal and  Rattie picked up his own rebound and deposited the puck into the net quicker than a teenager cashes a paycheck on a Friday night. Problem? The referee blowed the whistle. He also blowed the call …

Wait a sec …

The referee received advice from the video goal judge or his angry wife. Either way, the disallowed goal was allowed for whatever reason. The goal should not have counted as the referee blew his whistle. Why he blew his whistle is another matter entirely. Suddenly it was 4-1. Canada was back in it …

Then – they were out once more …

Gaudreau netted his tournament leading seventh goal late in the period and Team USA stretched their advantage once again to four. It was the worse defeat for Canada at the hands of the Americans. Team Canada will play for the Bronze medal while the U. S  will play either Sweden or Russia for the Gold on Saturday night …

This win for the Americans was too easy.

Galchenyuk’s Top Ten Reasons for Signing a Three Year Deal

The Habs’ third pick in the 2012 draft, Alex Galchenyuk, has inked an entry level – three year deal with Le Club de Hockey.

image

With little trepidation, the Russian agreed to the deal for several reasons.

Here now are the top ten;

10. Heard the strippers in Montreal are much better than in Sarnia.

9. Are you kidding? Miss a chance to play with Scott Gomez … ?

8. The colors red, white and blue add a fiery dimension to his normal placid complexion.

7. Three words; Awesome skate sharpener!

6. Where else can you buy premium Russian vodka until 11pm every night?

5. ‘You say tomato – I say tomate!’

4. Always wanted to get up close to a black hockey player …

3. Driving Montreal roads; A ‘new’ challenge!

2. Heard Youppi is really Tretiak in disguise.

And Galchenyuk’s number one reason for signing with the Canadiens?

1. His Mom told him to …!

TSN 990; The Voices of Reason

As most hockey and sports fans are aware, the city of Montreal is in danger of losing its only English language sports radio station.

A fact which treds on the road of prohibition of the language and civil liberties in this town.

Mitch Melnick – a man who has fought and created a station that not only gives a voice to English sports fans in this province, it allows him and his colleagues to provide educated and street – smart views that only anglophone Montrealers could provide to the listeners.

The French stations such as RDS, maintain a monopoly on hockey and although they provide great coverage of the beloved Canadiens de Montreal, their views stem  from the legacy of the Rocket, Beliveau and Lafleur. The French culture‘s views on the team.

Within this scope of talent, there lies the Blakes, the Harveys and the Robinsons. The English legacy which countered the French etoiles so elegantly. The Pollocks, the Bowmans – the Irvins.

Add the long and predominantly English heroes which passed and blocked their way to stardom with the Alouettes, the 99.9 percent of all the adored Montreal ExposTSN 990 is the link to the past.

A time when sports transcended the language barrier. Eras when the coach of the Habs had to win and not worry about ordering Sheppard’s Pie in French.

Melnick et al provide a more balanced, just way of gazing at the pastures of sports in this city.

French broadcasters and some of the French – Canadian fans have driven the Habs into a rusty garage filled with soiled rags of the past jaded with mis-informed views of the team’s successes and history.

Who should be removed from the airwaves?

image

They Tore Down Paradise and Put up a Parking Lot …

No more plaques, no more statues, no more teachers’ dirty looks …

The profs in question will be shoving their disconnected looks the Habs ‘ way instead.

For a franchise whose image lies somewhere between Jeffrey Dahlmer and Mario Tremblay, the announcement of the team tearing down Centennial Plaza in lieu of a condo project is suspect. Sketchy …

Not only are ‘ the corporate Habs ‘ ripping up a celestial cemetery, the accountants are subtracting the hearts of the many fans who aided in the construction of the plaza – brick by brick …

According to Molson – the bricks, bought by fans with personalized messages to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
team’s final Cup win … ( digress shall we ), will unequivocally be placed in storage until further notice.

Was there a disclaimer involved in the sales receipt when the partisans parted with their pennies to purchase pieces of the plaza? A note stating the bits of nostalgia written from the souls of people from Gaspe to Chilliwack can be moved by the Club de Hockey Canadien …?

If yes – cool!

If the response is no, nada – ‘watcha talkin’ bout Willis?’ – then, in the words of the disco band Shirley and Co.; ‘Shame, shame, shame – shame on you! ‘

Well – watcha goin’ to do?!

The Canadiens used to be the hockey equivalent of ‘ Hey Jude ‘ , ‘Stairway to Heaven‘ or ‘ Satisfaction’. Publicly anyways.
In the days of the typewriter, before the internet made porn a cause for divorce – all the seedy and suspect business or hockey decisions were kept in secrecy.

Guys like Red Fisher were the sole bearers of bad Habs’ moves. More times than not – the news was kept behind closed penalty box doors. If guys like Mr. Fisher wanted access to the team, anything out of the ordinary was kept out of the ordinary press if Fisher wanted to keep his privaleges privileged.

Times have changed. Soooo much!

Loyalty, tradition and honor has been jettisoned from the ship of society so often, the ship sails on filled with greed as the captain and inconsiderate as the first mate.

The majority of the men whose numbers hang from the targets of so much love and adoration at Le Centre Bell, skated a different ice surface. A mirrored canvas, a reflection of a different time. They painted historic statistics with paint brushes filled with the true colors of red, white and blue.

Not the dollar store purchased acrylic colors which the modern – day team has utilized far too often in the past ten years.

The University of Montreal Hockey, the glory and the tradition of the franchise appears to have closed.

School’s out. Forever …

What Number will Grigorenko Wear?

Stranger things have happened …

It is too bad Mike Milbury is not a G.M. any longer. If so – the chances of the Montreal Canadiens landing Nail Yakupov would be enormous! Sadly, Milbury has been resigned to rough up Pee Wee hockey players who dare cross his son …

The draft is coming this Friday. The Canadiens, barring a Milbury- esque move by the Oilers or Columbus; will select third. According to a source, the Habs will select Mikhail Grigorenko with their pick – they would be stupid not to.

Consider the choices.

Yakupov will end up number one and become a Gretzky alma mater. Columbus desperately requires a defenceman so Ryan Murray will end up in Columbus. Edmonton also needs someone to keep the puck out of the net, a scenario is the Oilers and Bluejackets flip- flop their picks. Plausible yet unlikely.

Which leaves Grigorenko, Forsberg and Galchenyuk.

Filip Forsberg is a power forward who has said he will not play in the NHL for at least a year. Forsberg is not what the Habs need right now. They have an abundance of power- type forwards. Pacioretty, Bourque, Cole to name a few. The Habs do not need someone to create chaos, they need someone to create open ice. Which brings us to …

Alex Galchenyuk is a big strong talented kid. Some say better than Grigorenko. Think of Mario Lemieux with Bobby Orr knees. That is the problem. The Montreal Canadiens have a golden opportunity to pick a player who can lead the team offensively for many years to come. They have an opportunity to buy a Porsche. Do they need a car with a dented fender?

Mikhail Grigorenko is the perfect fit for the Habs. Young, talented and a natural goal scorer. Take away his bout with mono – the only player of the three who arrives ready to play. Add the fact he has played in Quebec and has an idea of what to expect in Montreal. Patrick Roy was his coach, be sure the former Hab goaltender has spoken to Bergevin et al regarding the kids’ character among other things. Be sure Roy has spoken to Grigorenko of Montreal and what he can reap if he stays focused.

The only thing Montreal must do is to ensure Grigorenko does not fall into the same void Price did. The Habs need to babysit the kid and make sure he is kept away from the nightclubs. This is the reason the team has hired Lapointe et al. Player development means to grab a guy like Grigorenko by the hand until he is able to collect his first Art Ross trophy.

The draft is on June 22.

Stranger things can happen …

Molson in Meetings – Roy Out?

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or something like that …

According to a source, Montreal Canadiens’ owner Geoff Molson has spent almost the entire past two weeks behind closed doors.

High – security type stuff.

One man is conspicuous with his absence. That man’s name is Patrick Roy.

According to someone whose job allows a view of such comings and goings …Roy of Rempart fame has visited the least amount of times compared to other coaching camdidates. What does that mean?

Depending on a person’s passion, rational thinking and the amount of beers digested after dinner – Roy’s resting in Ste. Foy could dIctate a number of possibilities …

Molson and newly- appointed G.M. Bergevin, may have hired their coach a while ago. These ‘cloak and hockey stick’ meetings – an opportunity to solve different issues. Small matters such as what train to place Scott Gomez on, how to keep Grigorenko away from future KHL visitors and Carey Price far as possible from buckin’ broncos …

For argument’s sake, if Patrick or anyone else has been hired as the Habs’ new leader; why allow a distraction when important issues such as draft day approaches. Especially if their man is Roy. The phone would be ringing more often in Molson and Bergevin’s office than a pleasant pizza joint with a half- priced pepperoni pizza on sale.

Who needs that when Rene Bourque is AWOL and Tomas Kaberle added an offspring to the world who just may grow into another … well, Kaberle!

L’absence de Roy could also imply the team is still looking for the perfect candidate to raise the team to new heights. Although, no candidates have passed before Molson in person for at least a week.

Could Bergevin and Molson be smarter than your average Belarusian brother? Are they speaking to their new coach via Skype? Plotting strategy and making a draft plan to suit the new bosses’ needs … ?

Given the Montreal Canadiens’ recent success with a ‘tight- lipped’ mentality, a fan of the team can only hope for one thing;

Silence is golden …

Hey! Blockhead…!

Suddenly, everyone is upset with the New York Rangers.

Why? Is the entire team wearing John Tortorella masks and scaring kids in the playground? Not quite. What the team is doing is blocking shots.

We already have goaltenders, we don’t need six. – Bobby Holik

Holik played for the New Jersey Devils – a team that was credited with ruining hockey as the entire on – ice squad would collapse to their zone. Their style was called a trap and helped the Devils win Stanley Cups.

New York is collapsing everyone in front of their net and the entire team appears to be blocking shots. According to Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history; all this started with Roger Nielsen when Nielsen was coaching the Leafs.

” He ( Roger ) realized with guys like Lapointe, Robinson and  Savard on our points, if you covered them – they just passed quickly to our talented forwards. So, he left the points open and put all his forwards below. His goalie only had to concentrate on the shot from the point. “

Holik concurs with Bowman that it was  not Lemaire`s nor the Devils`fault.

“The so called Dead Puck Era was not caused by the New Jersey Devils winning three Stanley Cups in eight years. It was caused by rapid expansion, diluting the talent pool, and the league’s refusal at that time to enforce rules already on the books.”

Strong words from a guy who should know. “We are in a different era now and it’s time to focus on today’s game and how to make it better. If you think everybody blocking shots, collapsing around net (creating a force field) and eliminating most scoring chances is the proper approach then you are winning.”

Holik`s words should be heeded by Montreal fans, the Montreal media and the Canadiens` management.  In 2010, a certain Jacques Martin coached the Habs deep into the playoffs. Two rounds following victories over Pittsburgh and Washington.

In those series, lead by former Hab defenceman Hal Gill – Montreal blocked more shots than any other team. Guys that would never put thier bodies in front of blistering slapshots, doing it at alarming rates. It worked …

Les Canadiens advanced to the Conference finals and were felled by their lack of sniping. Beat by Bobrovski – the worst shot blocker in the league.

As the Rangers block their way to a possible Stanley Cup, a Montreal Canadien fan should remember it was Martin who coached the Habs – not Cunneyworth nor anyone else.

It could have been Tortorella …

Why wasn`t everyone upset with the Canadiens?

A Coyote in Sheep’s Clothing?

Division- wise, they completed the season third place in the Western Conference. Point- wise, they finished sixth overall amongst eight teams. Heart- wise, the Phoenix Coyotes may be number one for hockey fans around the globe …

Why is that?

For starters, no one save the players in Phoenix, their fans and the press that follow them – really took the team seriously.

The reason?

The only media attention the squad gathered for the past three seasons was negative due to the ‘ vagabond ‘ label tagged on their hockey sweaters. A Gypsy- esque existence created by the bankruptcy of their former owner and the subsequent ‘sideshow’ that ensued.

Blackberry creator and CEO, Jim Balsillie on May 6 – 2009, issued the following statement just days after the Coyotes’ chief executor officer Jerry Moyles filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

I am excited to move closer to bringing an NHL franchise to what I believe is one of the best unserved hockey markets in the world — southern Ontario. A market with devoted hockey fans, a rich hockey history, a growing and diversified economy and a population of more than seven million people.

Balsillie was rich and in the eyes of hockey fans who believe the game belongs in Canada – was just that; Canadian …

The President of RIM ( Research in Motion ) gave the Coyotes along with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, 212.5 million reasons why the team should be located in Ontario, Canada. Mr. Bettman balked at the ‘ Bal – sillie’- ness of the offer and amid conspiracies, the pair fought back and forth over the sale of the team.

Meanwhile, the fans and the team skated on thin ice…

Loneliness brings Togetherness

You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used.
Go to him now, he calls you, you can’t refuse.
When you ain’t got nothing, you’ve got nothing to lose
You’re invisible now, you’ve got no secrets to conceal.

~ Bob Dylan

While the arrogant Balsillie and the equally pretentious Bettman dueled with their piercing egos, all the attention remained away from the ice surface.

Everyone from Bob Mackenzie at team TSN to Osama Bin Laden at team Al-Qaeda – paid no attention to the quality of the on ice construction with team Coyote. How could a team, that was being run ‘part time’ by the NHL head office, be run efficiently when the NHL itself was run so inefficiently at times – full time?

The Coyotes were deemed dead through the visors of many. Left howling at the side of route 33. The road that leads to Phoenix is not numbered 66 and nobody – especially the Coyotes’ fans; expected to get their ‘ kicks’!

Then something happened.

It’s as if Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan sat down under the ‘cone of silence’ with Maxwell Smart. Together, Doan and agent 86 plotted a plan to dispel the ‘CHAOS’ that became a puck around the team’s neck. A vulcanized weight bringing everyone associated with the team down to a level lower than the real Devil of New Jersey could fathom.

Phoenix rose from the ashes. The burgundy bird took flight as Bettman continued his plight to sell the team to an Arazonian millionaire. ( Balsillie’s offers, it turns out – as silly as Bettman thought).

Belief 101

It began in 2010 with a playoff birth and a love affair with a rag- tag bunch of outcasts and third line skaters. The entire city – taking the team home in their hearts each night. A temporary house for each player to dry their sweaters and ‘air out’ their skates.

After the team bowed out in the first round, somehow it made the Coyotes more lovable. Merchandise at an all- time high. Ticket sales great! More importantly – the team was better as they took to the ice for the start of the 2011-12 season.

Don Maloney, the G.M. and Dave Tippett – the coach, prepared the ‘ yotes’ to play and disregard the rumors of re – location and sale. Even the fans – partly for growing attached and partly for wanting to watch a team for what maybe their final season in Phoenix; showed up every game.

As a howl echoes through the arena with each Phoenix goal, there is a sense throughout the Coyotes’ den something special is happening. After-all, ‘ a homeless man cannot hit rock bottom when he is living on a rock’. There is one way to go for Shane Doan’s team and that direction is toward London, England. The birthplace of the 16th Earl of Derby. Otherwise known as Lord Stanley of Preston

The creator of the Stanley Cup’s relatives have never seen a coyote and they are not sheep- ish to say so …

Day by day, watching you disappear
Wishing that you were still here beside me
On my own, swimming against the tide
There’s nobody on my side but your memory
Then you’ll rise right before my eyes

Monday Q Tip

Did you rake the leaves, wash the car and feed the dog?

Perhaps you raked the dog, washed the leaves and stuffed Kibbles n’ Bits into your car’s gas tank … ?

No worries – at least you did something this past weekend. That’s more than the;

St. Louis Blues

In case all your weekend tasks kept you away from your television / computer / buddy who is a hockey fan – the L.A. Kings swept the Blues in four games. If your are keeping track of such things – the Kings have now eliminated the number one and two seeds in the Western Conference.

The Kings had just a little more experience than St. Louis and combined with the loss of Halak, this series was as anti- climatic as discovering your new girlfriend is a he and adores playing horseshoes ( not that there is anything wrong with horseshoes ).

Blues’ goalie Elliot, the keeper of the season’s best goals against average – did not play bad. On occasion – when a team requires a win, a change between the pipes shakes things up. Adorns a team’s Christmas tree a different perspective as they gander back toward the crease. St. Louis had this advantage all season with the best goalie tandem in the NHL. Unfortunately, Halak picked the worse time to be run over by his teammate and injure his lower body. The series would have been different otherwise …

A Special Birthday

Yesterday, Denis Brodeur and his wife, spent the day wondering where the years have gone. For them, forty years appears like yesterday as they sat around reminiscing and watching the Devils take a 3 – 1 commanding lead against the Flyers.

Was it really their little boy? The one who cried when he first lost a game as a net minder in Atom hockey? Was it him standing in goals yesterday as the newly – turned, forty year old, winningest goaltender in hockey history? Saving his way to yet another Devils’ win and accumulating more wins and lore to pack in his suitcase for his eventual trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame?

It sure was M. et Madame Brodeur.

For one moment, do not think his teammates are not aware of these facts and are giving that little extra. The little Devils – all the way to the big ones … are going to help anyway they can to give Martin Brodeur the best birthday present in hockey.

Lord Stanley’s Cup!

Sentimental fans, even the ones who live under the Arch in St. Louis, must all be cheering for Brodeur and nostalgia … Sorry Mr. Quick – your time will come!

Speaking of goalies …

Since that fateful morning in 1985 when Flyers’ net minder Pelle Lindbergh drove his Porsche into a wall, his former position continues to ‘ haunt ‘ Philadelphia.

Ironically, as a young lad in Sweden – Lindbergh dreamed of playing for the Flyers and skating in his idol’s steps. His hero? Bernie Parent. Pelle’s parents going so far to bring the little Lindbergh to North America to see Parent play …

Pelle’s Porsche – Curse?

The Flyers, about now – wish either Lindbergh or Parent were in goals. Bryzgalov cannot make the ‘ big save ‘ and it is deflating the Flyers’ playoff balloon. The man whose fear lies ‘ in the woods ‘, is not out of the woods. He is not playing bad. He is playing much better than he did against Pittsburgh. Sadly, he cannot channel Patrick Roy of 1986 or Pelle Lindbergh of 1995 … Ouija board anyone?

This is not your Father’s hockey league …

It used to be, players, coaches and presumably their wives – all remained with one organization for minimum ten years. Unless, of course – your name happened to be Marc Bergevin and you played defense.

Now – everyone is moving so much, a GPS is required to keep up to date in your hockey pools.

The Hawks have announced, Norm ( no relation to the t.v. Star ) Maciver, a former assistant coach in Boston and most recently director of scouting in Chicago – has been appointed the new Ass’t G.M. in Chicago …

Maciver takes Montreal G.M. Bergevin’s place who held the same positions in Chicago.

Marc? I’ll be right there ….!

Now, it is reported Bergevin – is recruiting Leafs’ director of player personnel Rick Dudley to come and be his assistant in Montreal. Dudley has been with the Leafs since 2011. Dudley was the G.M. in Atlanta before his Toronto tenure and was replaced by former Hawks’ assistant G.M Cheveldae when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg. If this is the case – Dudley ( a former Buffalo Sabre ) would replace Larry Carriere ( another former Sabre ), as the assistant G.M. in Montreal.

Scotty Bowman was a coach in Montreal and the G.M. in Buffalo. He is presently a senior advisor in Chicago and his son is the G.M. Of the BlackHawks.

No news whether Denis Savard; a former BlackHawk / Habs’ player and a past coach in Chicago – is returning to Montreal or ending up in Buffalo.

Confused … ?

Go outside and get the Kibbles n’ Bits from the gas tank. Things will be more smooth after that …

Finally …

Max Pacioretty greets Zdeno Chara at the World Hockey Championships!

Can you read Max ‘s mind?

Bergevin to Habs – CHarma comes Back!

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far away …

Way before Gary Bettman destroyed the notion of dynasties with his salary cap, parity- driven ideas. A time when Ilya Bryzgalov’s Father may have started the genetic fear of bears in the woods.

The Montreal Canadiens did the Chicago BlackHawks a huge favor. A singular gesture which is making it’s way back to Montreal – almost sixty years later.

Some would say, this was the first gift and sending Chris Chelios to the Windy city – the second. If this is the case, Marc Bergevin as Montreal’s new G.M. is the first payback for Montreal ‘ donating ‘ Edward CJ ‘ Eddie’ Litzenberger to Chicago in 1955.

Litzenberger began his hockey career with the Regina Pats in the Western Canada Junior Hockey League. In the beginning – his scoring prowess was evident as he led the league in scoring. He potted 44 goals in 40 games and continued his ways into the playoffs. Mr. Litzenberger led the playoffs in scoring with 14 goals in 12 games.

In 1952–53, he made his debut with the Montreal Canadiens, playing 2 games with the team before being sent to the Montreal Royals. He won the Rookie of the Year Award in the Quebec Senior Hockey League and was named to the Second All-Star Team.

‘Eddie’ played 29 games with the Canadiens in 1954 – 55. His 11 points ( 7 goals 4 assists )and potential were given to the Chicago Black Hawks.

The rest, as they say – history …

He posted 40 points in 44 games with the Black Hawks and was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy. Litzenberger was also selected for the NHL All-Star Game that year. Following three consecutive 30-goal seasons and being named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1956–57, Litzenberger was chosen to wear the ‘C’.

The gift from Saskatchewan via Montreal – the Captain of the Chicago Black Hawks in 1957–58.

Litzenberger was at the helm of a Black Hawks ship whose crew consisted of future Hall of Famers Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Pierre Pilote and Glenn Hall. Captain Eddie led this team to a Stanley Cup championship in 1960–61. It was the first Stanley Cup the Black Hawks had won since 1937–38. Twenty – two years!

Fast forward to the upcoming 2012 – 13 season in the National Hockey League

It will be twenty years since the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup. Although the team is not on the verge of bankruptcy as were the 1950′s Hawks, the 2011 – 2012 Habs left many fans bankrupt in their souls. Enter ‘ the gift ‘ Marc Bergevin.

An up and coming General Manager who learned his craft under the recent tutelage of Stan Bowman in Chicago. The son of a coach whose name Scotty brings people back to a glorious time in Montreal.

A galaxy far, far away …

The Montreal Canadiens’ New Coach? Relax!

Relax don’t do it
When you want to go to it
Relax don’t do it
When you want to come
Relax don’t do it
When you want to come
When you want to come

- Frankie Goes to Hollywood

One can only hope this is the song encircling the Habs’ new G.M. as he gets acquainted to his new office in Le Centre Bell.

Aside from little things such as removing Pierre Gauthier’s signed print of the Marx Brothers from his wall, M. Bergevin must commence repairing the on-ice Canadiens de Montreal. Pronto …

Forget the off-ice stuff. For now.

Leave that to Mr. Molson – after all, he comes from a long line of superior marketers. Who else but the Molson family could get folks from Port Hope, Ontario to drink Molson Export by re-naming and bottling the same beer as Molson Canadian. A spade is a spade and a drunken Wendel Clarke fan is a drunken Wendel Clarke fan.

Bergevin may or may not have his priorities in the following order;

  1. Hire a coach
  2. Concentrate on the draft.

If the number one choice is his number one choice – presumably a logic is tossing about in his Chicago – raised, Montreal – born mind. It all depends which type of team he is envisioning in his  thoughts.

A successful squad in the NHL is basically built in three ways. A trio of options that usually lead to a parade somewhere.

  1. A balance of speed and tremendous talent on the top two lines, countered by toughness and a couple of talented fifteen goal scorers on the bottom two lines.
  2. Three lines of talent blanketed with a tough fourth line.
  3. Four lines of character with two superstars.

As for the defence …

  1. Two offensive – minded players with speed, three tough and defensive – minded defence men and two that possess a combination of both.

Goaltending …

The goalie must stop pucks at key moments in a game. The type of save that lifts his team to greater heights. There is nothing worse for a player sitting on the bench witnessing a soft goal when they are doing their best to win a close game.

A goalie’s feelings work in reverse. A soft goal more often the end result when he sees his mates not scoring when he keeps them in the game. This was part of the problem for the Canadiens in 2011 – 12.

Bergevin’s job is to understand in himself which type of team he feels can win. He must keep the pieces of the puzzle that are part of the solution and rid the current day Habs of the parts that are non – conducive to his dreams. The coach he hires must be on the same ice rink. The new guy cannot be skating in Quebec city while Bergevin and his team are practising in Brossard.

Bergevin’s Options ( according to everyone but him).

Names of possible coaches are being bandied about in Montreal as loosely as loose lips sink already  sinking CH ships.

Bergevin should consider the following if indeed some of the candidates are his candidates as well;

Marc Crawford

The last five years Crawford coached in the NHL, his teams missed the playoffs. Vancouver, L.A. and Dallas. Crawford holds a.536 winning percentage as an NHL coach in fifteen years. He won a Stanley Cup in Colorado in 1995 – 96. It must be noted – the Avalanche team that won was filled with talent. Foote, Deadmarsh, Forsberg, Sakic, Nolan, Lemieux and Patrick Roy to name a few. Jean Perron and Jacques Demers won a Stanley Cup because of Patrick Roy – they are not considered to be candidates for the current day Habs. Just saying …

Bob Hartley

Almost a mirror image of Crawford. Hartley won a Stanley Cup in Colorado with pretty much the same line-up as Crawford possessed. Again – a certain M. Patrick Roy was between the pipes. In the last six years as a coach in the NHL (Colorado and Atlanta ), Hartley’s team missed the playoffs five times. Career -wise, the Hawksbury born coach has a winning percentage of .579 and most recently coached the Zürcher Schlittschuh Club Lions in the Swiss league to a championship.

Alain Vigneault

Anyone who follows the Habs is aware Alain Vigneault commenced his NHL coaching career in Montreal. M. Vigneault is a good coach who possesses a good sense of humour ( he coached Maxime Lapierre ) and a career winning percentage of .581. In Montreal for three seasons and twenty games ( 1997 – 2000 ), Vigneault was learning his craft as his borderline .500 record attests. Recently, M. Vigneault was blessed with a very talented team in Vancouver. A Stanley Cup finalist last season and a somewhat surprising exit in the first round this year. Does his stint in Vancouver and his gained experience allow him a return to Montreal? There are no Sedins in Montreal. Just sayin’…

Michel Therrien

Like M. Vigneault, Therrien started his career in Montreal and parted with a .500 record. He then went to Pittsburgh where he had two winning seasons with Malkin and Crosby. The following season – again with a talented Pittsburgh team, Therrien was fired with a 27 – 25 won / lost record and Pittsburgh went on to win the Cup under Dan Byslema. Really, Therrien has no business being considered for the job … If you can’t win with Crosby and Malkin, where can you win?

Guy Carbonneau

Probably the most sane choice of the bunch. He is the only Canadiens’ coach to gain over 100 pts in the past 18 seasons in Montreal. Very popular with the fans in the city and what could be his downfall – also allegedly very popular with the clubs around Montreal as well. He is associated with Bob Gainey which is bad yet he is no longer speaking to Bob Gainey which is good if he hopes to regain the coaching job. Bergevin and Carbonneau played their youth hockey in Quebec and come from the same era. This may help Guy get the job. Sheesh – the guy won with Kovalev on the team! Credit is due …

Patrick Roy

If a vote was held tomorrow in Montreal for a new mayor – Patrick Roy would get the job and he is not even a politician …

If M. Roy did not possess a winning attitude, M. Hartley, M. Crawford and M. Perron would not be Stanley Cup winning coaches. His ego and winning attitudes are legendary and dangerous. Roy wins when he can control situations and loses when he cannot. To be named as a rookie head coach in Montreal, Bergevin must understand Roy’s intentions. Roy must commit to Montreal and not have his heart in Quebec. Roy and Bergevim must also come to a very strict understanding about who is boss and where.

As an opponent and journeyman – Bergevin is well aware of Roy’s reputation. He probably knows better than anyone in the Habs organization the real stories of Roy. The ones the Habs were not privy to. Roy’s passion is what the Habs require – Roy’s passion is what the Habs do not need right now. Good luck Marc Bergevin …

The Result?

The great thing about Bergevin being hired is the fact he has never been part of the Canadiens’ organization. He has a mind of his own that was formed outside of the madness.

M. Bergevin did not arrive in Montreal and think about taking the job without ideas in his head. These ideas were talked about in his meeting with Molson and Savard. The Habs’ brass obviously enjoyed listening to Bergevin or else the Hawks’ former assistant G.M would be walking in the Windy city right now with his wife.

He could fool everyone and bring in some guy who is not on the top of the gossip lists in Montreal.

Someone like Joel Quenneville …?

Top Ten ‘ Things to Do ‘ List for Marc Bergevin

Les Canadiens de Montreal announced after many days of agonizingly slow speculation – Marc Bergevin is the new G.M of the hockey club.

Bergevin’s job will not be easy.

He grabs the reins of a franchise that need to rebuild their on – ice as well as their off – ice product. The organization has also taken many blows to their image. A fact that leaves the new G.M with plenty to do.

Thanks to some spies, here now is a copy of Marc Bergevin’s top ten things to do list;

10. Revoke Pierre Gauthier’s grandmother’s press pass.

9. Send Youppi for a makeover session. His hair colour? Top priority.

8. Elevate Bob Gainey‘s retired number a little higher to the rafters and – in turn … out of the general public’s sight lines.

7. Cancel monthly payments on Scott GomezAnthony Robbins motivational tapes.

6. Paint the exterior of the Bell Center a more friendly, ‘ welcoming ‘ shade of blue.

5. Find out how tall Brian Gionta really is …?

4. Make room in garage for the Molson beer delivery that is arriving on Monday.

3. Using Chicago connections – find out if Chris Chelios holds a grudge and if not, does he still have interest in playing?

2. Those kids that skate around just before the Habs take the ice? Call their parents and instill a 5 pm curfew.

Finally, upon seeing the work that lay before him, Marc Bergevin’s number one ‘ thing to do ‘ ?

1. Call Stan Bowman to see how far the bridge was burned behind him!

Marc Bergevin to be Announced as the Montreal Canadiens’ New G.M.

The Montreal Canadiens have hired Marc Bergevin as their new General Manager.

Marc Bergevin

The 46-year-old Bergevin arrives from the Chicago Blackhawks’ front office where he held a variety of positions for the past seven seasons. Bergevin also played for the Blackhawks, one of eight teams for which he played during a 20-year career.

Marc Bergevin spent his seventh season with the Blackhawks as Assistant General Manager after being named to the position on June 15, 2011. Bergevin has held various other positions in the organization, most recently as Director of Player Personnel.

Bergevin, a Montreal native, served as an Assistant Coach on Joel Quenneville’s staff during the 2008-09 campaign. He also spent three years on the Blackhawks scouting staff, including one as Director of Pro Scouting during the 2007-08 season.

Originally selected by the Blackhawks in the third round (59th overall) of the 1983 Entry Draft, Bergevin spent 20 seasons in the National Hockey League as a defenseman, collecting 181 points (36G, 145A) in 1,191 games with Chicago (1984-89), the New York Islanders (1989-90), Hartford Whalers (1990-92), Tampa Bay Lightning (1992-95, 2002-03), Detroit Red Wings (1995-96), St. Louis Blues (1996-2001, 2001-02), Pittsburgh Penguins (2000-01, 2002-04) and Vancouver Canucks (2003-04).

Bergevin also skated in 80 career Stanley Cup Playoffs contests with five different teams, recording nine points (3G, 6A) and 52 penalty minutes.

Bergevin and his wife, Ruth, reside in Chicago and have three children: two sons, Wes and Rhett, and a daughter, Elle.

Hey Andrei! You forgot Sergei?

The more things change in Andrei Kostitsyn‘s life, the more things don’t require a perestroika – at least in Andrei’s way of thinking.

AK46.

The Russian who was supposed to snipe for the Montreal Canadiens, is up to his old tricks. Let us hope for Kostitsyn’s lady of choice’s sake – the tricks are not old as he makes the rounds in the seedy side of the hockey rink.

Andrei and his teammate, Alexander Radulov, are both being scratched from game three in their second round series against the Coyotes. Suspended for breaking team rules.

Ah …. C’mon! It was just one night …. ?!

It appears the duo – took the wrong fork in the road to the Stanley Cup. Veering left to the wee hours of the morning instead of keeping a curfew and staying on the right track. Andrei should know better. While in Montreal, the enigmatic Belarussian forward was linked periously close to a police investigation with alleged ties to the Russian mob.

Andrei, his younger brother Sergei and former teammate – Roman Hamrlik; cavorted off the ice instead of the ice surface. In a town such as Montreal where a hockey – playing Hab is the equivalent of a Tom Cruise sighting in Tinseltown, the trio’s shenanigans were as obvious as a pimple on Jimmy Durante‘s nose.

The ‘ Booze ‘ Brothers

Sergei was shipped away ( hockey matters played a small part ), Roman was exonerated and Andrei remained off the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Until now …

Did brother Andrei mistake the anonymity of being a Predator with a licence to prey on rum and cokes? Did himself and Radulov not understand or feel the heat from the media’s playoff scrutiny as it filtered through the camera lenses?

Granted – this pair of partying players did not get arrested. They were not involved in a secret – service undercover operation involving undercover girls wearing Secret nylons and providing a service. As far as the world knows – they did nothing short of not being able to read the digital numbers that flash from their cellphones. The ones that informed them that David Letterman was off and Ferguson was awaiting them. Yet – in the name of Dick Duff … Where’s the hockey integrity? The passion? The desire to win …?

Never Quit

Down 2 – 0 in games to a Coyote team should not give anyone the right to re- enact a scene from the movie Coyote Ugly. Want to be ugly? By all means. Go back to the hotel room and watch some American politics on the tube. That will be more sleaze than Radulov and Kostitsyn will ever witness at an after – hours club. Not satisfied boys? Perhaps watching game tapes of your team’s performance in a loss to Pheonix should be on the agenda? That’s sleazy!

After – all, hockey and winning the Stanley Cup are the reasons millions are being directly deposited into your account. Up one or two games in a series? An outing with a few beers and a missed curfew is more tolerable yet not really. Win or lose – in a few weeks, a summer of sun, ladies and Pina Coladas await.

For now …

Please concentrate on the task at hand. Ask anyone who has ever been part of a Stanley Cup winning team. The celebrations start following a win …

A perestroika that does not take place …

Mr. Elmer Lach

Mr. Elmer Lach recently dropped the puck at the Pointe Claire Oldtimer’s Tournament.

At ninety – four years young, Elmer is the oldest remaining person to have played for the Canadiens and the last surviving member of the famous Punch Line. That line consisted of himself, Toe Blake and Maurice ( the Rocket ) Richard.

Please enjoy these photos of an icon … How many people do you know can say they passed to and received a puck from the Rocket!

Why the New York Rangers won’t Win the Cup and Rick’ s Picks – Update

Listening to ‘ the Voice ‘ instead of Don Cherry? Christina Aguilera much prettier than Ron Maclean?

Not to worry …

Here is an update as to what has been happening on the ice in the first round of the NHL playoffs;

Eastern Conference

Philadelphia                     Pittsburgh

In the words of former Chicago Cub broadcaster Harry Caray … Holy Cow!  Who would have saw this coming? Not only are the Flyers up 3 – 1 in the series; the two team have combined for more goals than the production of the Montreal Canadiens in an entire season! They are fighting – they are scoring – the only people not having fun in this series are the referees, Brendan Shanahan and the goalies.

After four games ( if we can call them that ), the Pennsylvania based teams have combined for forty – five goals. That total has beaten the record for the most goals by two teams in a series first four games. The two rivals have accumulated an average of 11.25 goals and 70.50 penalty minutes per game, as well as nine misconduct infractions and three eight-plus-goal explosions.

Starting goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury and Ilya Bryzgalov may want to stay home tonight for game five. The pair of padded ones have each faced 109 shots and possess save percentages of .817 (20 goals allowed) and .844 (17 goals allowed) and GAAs of 5.43 and 4.95. The back-ups? Even worse.

The Pens’ Brent Johnson and the Flyers’ Sergei Bobrovsky have allowed two goals on six shots (.667, 6.00) and five goals on 18 shots (.722, 8.11).

Grab some popcorn, forget Christina ( except for your dreams ) and sit back. What will happen next?

Only Fred Shero, Bob Johnson and God knows…

Washington                        Boston

The defending Stanley Cup champions are in tight against the Capitals. What else is new? The Bruins commenced last year’s Cup winning drive by going the limit against the Canadiens in the first round and requiring overtime in game seven. Guess what? Expect more of the same thing as the two squads see-saw until someone falls into the sand (vacation time) of Florida. A defence – oriented series from a defence -oriented conference. Aside from a couple of minor altercations ( Backstrom – Peverley ), a relative tame series with Tim Thomas and a surprising Washington rookie net minder  ( Holtby ) – holding the twine.  Series is tied 2 – 2 and should be tied 3 – 3 in a couple of days.

Florida                               Jersey

Outside of Florida and New Jersey … Does anyone care what happens to these two teams? The only compelling stories emerging from this first – round series is Martin Brodeur“s continual climb up the record books and the return of plastic rats on Florida ice. The series is even at two – heading back to Newark, New Jersey on Saturday. Martin Brodeur surpassed Patrick Roy with his 24th playoff shutout in a 4 – 0 win in Florida last night. A sign of the Panthers demise? Maybe if Brodeur was twenty … Expect a flip – flop on Saturday and a close Florida win.

Ottawa         New York

Didn’t anyone tell the Rangers to not wake sleeping giants? Or – in this case, sleeping Senators ..? Tortorella’s skaters gave the Sens’ iconic captain; Alfredsson – a headshot. The iconic captain is nearing the end of an illustrious career. Do his teammates know this? Are they aware this may be a final attempt for their captain to hoist the Cup? Yes, yes and yes – an upset is underway as the teams head to the Big Apple tied at two games. Are the Rangers shaking in their skates? Do the eighth place Senators have anything to lose? Are they looser than their opponents …? Where is Sean Avery when the Rangers  need him …!

Stay tuned for the West ….gringos!

It’s All Campbell’s Fault !

Players almost killing players.

In turn – players almost killing players with retaliation.

Which – in turn, causes more retaliation.

Hockey has always been played by these rules. Sometimes, the retaliation happened the following shift. Other times – twenty minutes later and often; the next time the two teams played one another. It is and was – the nature of the beast.

Hockey; A Tough game

In the first round of the 2012 playoffs, what we are witnessing is an alarming trend of disrespect. An arm for a head. There is no respect for opponents, for star players and most importantly – no respect for the officiating.

Much like the Montreal Canadiens‘ treatment of Randy Cunneyworth, the NHL’s disciplinary committee has placed their referees in a no-win situation. It is not Brendan Shanahan‘s fault. It is the fault of the greedy owners that are running the ‘show’ and in contrast – ruining the great game of hockey. In effect – the current situation; the head-shots, the elbows, the blindsided hits – can all be placed directly into the lap of Colin Campbell.

Campbell ( and his advisors; aka the owners ), had the opportunity in 2010-11 to put an end to the madness. Mr. ( and I use the term loosely ) Campbell as the head of discipline in that season – had a gift placed under his Christmas tree. A present he not only overlooked – a beautifully – wrapped occasion to alter hockey as we know it.

Zdeno Chara committed so many fouls on Max Pacioretty; leaving the Canadiens’ forward unconscious and death – like on the ice was the least of Campbell and the league’s problem. Chara, in one 6’9 ” play – committed interference , roughing, boarding and hitting-from-behind. A fierce ‘ hockey play ‘ that stunned the viewing audience from ‘coast to coast’. For ten minutes or more, Max Pacioretty lay motionless on the ice and to many children, parents and grandparents – ‘Patches’ had passed on to the great rink in the sky.

An event that shook hockey. More than most of the infamous scandals of the past twenty – years inside the rink. Even Bertuzzi’s destruction of Steve Moore‘s career ( and neck ) was able to be categorized. Retribution between two teams; an age-old tradition reaching back to the days of the Rocket, Milt Schmidt and Conn Smythe. Bertuzzi’s act was not proper. The consequences as improper as anyone has seen on the rink. Yet it was something that  has happened in the game of hockey too many times to count. The difference? Moore’s state of health since …

Chara, in strong contrast, potentially placed Pacioretty into  a coffin because the Hab forward passed him by. Add that to a little shove Pacioretty had given Chara the year before – it was a type of retribution yet Chara crossed the line. In a very BIG way …

Campbell et al should have suspended the Bruin player twenty games for pushing Pacioretty’s head into the stanchion. Evidence of the defence man’s hand clearly doing the nasty deed – all over Youtube, the papers and the internet in many forms. So obvious was Chara’s irrational behaviour – a monkey watching hockey for the first time would cringe and reach for his Mom’s hand.

It was an opportunity for the NHL to curb the enthusiasm of the new generation of hockey players. Face it. These new guys have been raised on violent video games, violent movies and UFC fighting. They are a new breed of hockey warriors that have grown from milk bottles to Red Bull. They live in an era where ‘ no responsibility ‘ is required or awarded. On top of that – they are dressed like characters from the film;  Mad Max.

Colin Campbell’s negligence only re-enforced those ideas. His negligence allowing the players, the coaches and the suits upstairs to see how far they can go.

The Richard Family

In the old days, the Rocket and all the players that went to war on the ice surface – arrived home to a different world. The Simpsons were not telling Eddie Shore‘s kids that it was cool to be rebellious. Rap music was not insulting Red Kelly’s offspring because they did not have ‘ bling’. In the old days – another Campbell , as in Clarence – stood his ground and suspended Maurice Richard for striking an official.

A decision that affected the way the players behaved  toward officials to this day. Since that decision;

Players do not kill officials!

Elmer Lach; The Legend that Time almost Forgot

Have your buddies gone golfing without you?

What’s that? Not up on Steve Jobs’ legacy? Then do it the old – fashioned way! Grab a piece of paper and your favorite Robert Picard pen. Sit down on your Carey Price – signed couch and relax!

It is time for a Montreal Canadiens quiz! Ready?

What player celebrated the fifty – ninth anniversary of scoring a Stanley Cup winning goal on April 16, 2012? Who was the all – time leading scorer in NHL history when he hung up his skates for good in 1954? Which former Hab retains the record for most assists (six) in one game by a Montreal Canadien?

If any of your answers include Maurice Richard, Boom Boom Geoffrion or Jean Beliveau – sorry, an excursion to Montreal Canadien summer school is on your agenda. No holiday to visit Howe or Harry Howell. No trip to Toronto to see Gretzky’s jersey and no lunch at Guy Lafleur’s restaurant!

The correct response to all three questions is Elmer James Lach. The funny thing …? The last person to give you the proper answer – Lach himself …

Maurice Richard, Elmer Lach and Toe Blake

On hand yesterday to drop the ceremonial first puck for the 43th annual Pointe Claire Old- Timer’s hockey tournament, the ninety- four year old and longest living Montreal Canadien – was all smiles as he took his place at center ice. His rightful place!

Hard to believe – almost sixty years ago, Lach was on another ice surface and another era – celebrating his very own Stanley Cup winning goal against the Boston Bruins in a 1 – 0 overtime victory. A goal just 1:23 into the opening extra period. A goal that gave the Saskatchawan- born Lach a broken nose!

” Me and Maurice ( Richard ) were so excited that we won, we jumped into each other ‘s arms to celebrate! Rocket’s stick caught my nose a little to the side and that was the way I started my summer!” Lach laughs while he signs a miniature Stanley Cup. ” It didn’t bother me that much – I had been though worse.”

Worse is an understatement as Mr. Lach dealt with a fractured skull, a badly broken arm, two broken jaws ( which he played through ), a fractured leg, the same cheekbone shattered twice, a sliced foot, hundreds of stitches and 7 broken noses; including the one delivered by The Rocket. Of all the injuries – the one that bothered him the most however, was the broken hip he suffered on February 25, 2011.

” I was shoveling the snow off my deck and before you knew it – I was on my back! Luckily my wife looked out and saw me laying there. If not, I would have been covered in snow!” Lach laughs. ” This bothered me most because of my age – it took a while to heal and I can’t stand sitting around!”

Lach played through all his injuries, mostly on the famous Punch Line with Rocket Richard and Toe Blake. Two men – according to Lach, that shared the same sentiments as himself; they hated to lose!

In the 1944–45 season, Lach played in all fifty games, picking up a league-leading eighty points ( 26 goals – 54 assists). The same season, linemate Maurice Richard became the first player in the NHL to score 50 goals in 50 games. The Punch line amassed 220 points in total, a NHL record until the 1960s. Lach earned the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player. He was also named to the First All-Star team.

” That was the reason our line was so successful! All three of us did not agree with a defeat. When we travelled to Toronto – to play the Leafs, the three of us would go to the same bar. We had a few drinks and all we talked about was hockey, hockey, hockey! Because of these talks, we knew exactly where each other would be on the ice at all times!”

Elmer Lach won three Stanley Cups with the Habs and won two scoring titles. He retired as the league’s all-time leading scorer in 1954 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame 12 years later.

His number 16 was retired on December 4, 2009 during the Montreal Canadiens Centennial celebrations on the same night as Emile Bouchard. The latter passing away on Saturday morning – two days before the anniversary of Lach’s winner.

Mr. Lach remembers his former teammate fondly as he recalls the time the team elected Bouchard as captain. ” Butch was our leader! There was no doubt about it! We all had to write down our vote and I was probably the first to give my vote ( Bouchard ) to our coach – Dick Irvin Sr.

Lach also recalls Irvin Sr. as the guy who pulled the most practical jokes on the team. The coach – of all people !

” I came out of the shower after a game and my clothes were missing. I looked at Rocket – I knew by his expression, he had no idea where they were. Same thing with Toe. Then, I see Mr. Irvin standing in the corner. His hand trying to cover his mouth but his laughter got louder and louder!”

Elmer does not watch a lot of hockey yet enough to give his take on the current woes of the club de hockey Canadien. Lach believes Geoff Molson does not know enough about hockey and that is the biggest problem.

” It all starts at the top and falls down. If management is off – the rest of the team will suffer.” He says as he signs yet another souvenir for a fan(free of charge).

Mr. Lach utilizes a cane and a walker to get around. Dave Stubbs, one of the best sports writers in North America and writer at the Montreal Gazette- has become Lach’s unofficial ‘ keeper ‘ in recent years. Stubbs cannot understand why Lach does not receive the same accolades as Richard and Blake. Part of the reason, says Stubbs, is Lach’s humble nature.

” He’s not one for the public eye – it took a while, as usual, for me to convince him to drop the puck today!” Stubbs continues. ” This guy played on one of the greatest lines in the history of hockey. There was no one tougher or more dedicated to the Canadiens than him.”

So what will Lach do to celebrate the anniversary of his Stanley Cup winning goal?

” If the weather is nice tomorrow – I’m going golfing!” States Lach as he finishes his Budweiser …

Paul Graif – Time Waits for No One !

Doing the news and sports on the K103 morning show, working for Larry King on CNN or anchoring the sports on CTV – Paul Graif’s life is run by time.

So what? Isn’t everyone’s?

Ted Bird, Java Jacobs and Graif

Yes, the world works and operates by the clock. In Graif’s case – fifteen seconds late deciphers into a public embarrassment. An error that can decide his fate.

” When I anchor sports on CTV, the supper edition – I have a little over five minutes to get all the important sports news of the day into that time period. ” Says Graif as his eyes wander between the Bruins – Capitals’ playoff game and his computer. ” The later edition at 11pm gives me ten minutes, not a lot to give a concise round – up of the day’s sporting headlines!”

If the Hampstead – born Graif screws up, an entire city witnesses the gaff. A mistake that could send him to the unemployment line in a hurry. Which is why, according to Graif – it is important to be prepared and to love what you do.

Before each shift, Graif enters his workplace with an idea in his head of what he will write for his upcoming newscast. The biggest news on this day was the passing of former Habs’ captain; Emile ‘ Butch ‘ Bouchard. Sometimes, a little luck goes a long way …

Emile Bouchard

” I was fortunate in this case to know Emile’s son ( and former Hab ) Pierre Bouchard. I gave Pierre a call on this difficult day to get his reaction on his Father’s death.” Graif says.

Pierre Bouchard;

My Dad called the doctor around four o’ clock this morning and told him that he thinks he is going. He passed away at five.

It was the Rocket who brought attention to my Dad to the newer generation. When asked by Ron Fournier who was one of the older guys that was underrated – Maurice replied it was Butch Bouchard who needs more respect!

When they retired my Dad’s number, it added seven years to his life. I knew it meant a lot ( to my Father ) when I saw him blowing kisses to the fans! It affected him!

Paul was working for Global TV in 2003 – 04 when he was assigned to cover an up and coming hockey player by the name of Sidney Crosby. It was the future superstars’ first year in junior hockey with the Rimouski Oceanics and Graif headed to Drummondville. Emile Bouchard ( Butch’s son ) was there and Paul spent the afternoon meeting and hanging out with the Bouchard family. A few hours well spent and one of the things he loves about his job as a sportscaster as he recalls the night of Ken Dryden’s jersey retirement.

” During the first intermission of the game, myself and a few reporters were standing around listening to Dryden. Someone asked;’ Mr. Dryden, you are considered one of the best goalies who ever played the game, how do you respond to that? ‘”

Dryden, in his usual analytical way – responded;

” I don’t know if that is true. I may be that way for a certain generation of fans who were 8,9,10 years old when the Caanadiens teams I played on were great. At that age, you form the opinions and choose your heroes;they have the most lasting impression on you!”

” I thought to myself: Yes ! Exactly! It was moments like this that made me appreciate not only my job – my own way of seeing things!”

The Roots

Although Paul adores this city’s teams and the personalities that make them up – it is the New York Islanders and John Tonelli that remain close to the forty – one year old’s heart. A love affair that began in 1977 – a couple of years previous to New York’s dynasty.

” I had a friend named Judd Feldman when I was seven years of age. Judd received an authentic contract from the Islanders, an agreement that was given to him through connections. I thought it was the coolest thing and I became a big fan of the organization.”

Along with the team from Long Island, Graif lists the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals, baseball’s Baltimore Orioles and basketball’s Boston Celtics as his favorite sports teams.

Baseball is very close to the Dollard residents’ heart as he recalls watching Andre Dawson play his first game as an Expo in 1976. Graif was six years old. Recently – deceased Gary Carter was among one of his heroes as was Cal Ripken Jr. Not only did Paul play baseball ( third, first base and catcher ) – his father, Irving Graif was a very talented baseball player and athlete in general. So talented – the elder Graif received a try – out with the Montreal Royals in the early fifties, taking the field with the likes of Rocky Nelson and a young Tommy Lasorda; the Royals’ all – time winningest pitcher.

” My Dad, an engineer who is still working at the age of 75 – instilled a great work ethic into my brother ( a lawyer in Toronto ) and I. If I had to choose role models for my life – it is my Mom ( an art historian ) and my Father.”

On a professional level, Brian Williams, Brent Musberger and Ron McLean ( yes Ron McLean of coaches corner ) are people he looks up to. ” McLean is always so calm and composed – I really admire that in the man! Any person ..!” Says Graif as he jots down the time of the Capitals goal as they even the score against the Bruins. Dave Van Horne and Duke Snyder … ? ” Do you have to ask? ” Says Graif.

The Beginning

Paul commenced his sportscasting career half- accidently. He was attending Concordia University in political science and was kind of lost – wondering what to do with his life. He volunteered to work on the school newspaper – ‘The Link ‘. One of his first assignments was to cover the men’s basketball team. Says Graif; ” John Dore was the coach. We did not like each other from an earlier date. Suddenly,I was travelling with the team all the time!” Graif chuckles. ” Following a few games – Dore started respecting me and we remain friends to this day!”

That experience led to an on-air radio position as Graif produced and called the play-by-play of the football broadcast at McGill University. Just after – CKRK (now K103) radio station in Kahnawake, brought Paul on board as a roving reporter for the Expos, a position that gave the listeners a ‘ Graif ‘ perspective on the ball game every morning. He was also writing for The Suburban newspaper in Montreal.

While at university – Mr. And Mrs. Graif’s second offspring applied for a summer internship with CNN and in 1992 – off he went to Washington to work for the legendary Larry King at CNN. King – says Graif, is exactly as you see him. Rough and gruff with a real soft place in his heart.

“It was the experience of a lifetime,” he says. “I met everyone. They actually offered me a job but I still had a semester of school left. It was a tough decision. I wanted to finish school and it was going to lead to something behind the camera and that’s not what I wanted. It was production, being a producer. I knew I was already geared towards on-air.”

Graif returned to Montreal, collected his degree and joined K103 radio as the afternoon newscaster and volunteered as Mitch Melnick’s producer at CIQC ( am 600 ). It was with Melnick where doors starting opening for Graif as he scooped one of the biggest sports stories in 1994.

” I broke the end of the NHL referees strike about 3 hours before it ended. It was a whirlwind for me after that! For the next 48 hours all kinds of job offers came in. It was really nice. I think that summer I worked something like 72 of 75 days. Some days I actually would work four jobs.”

On his way to the ‘ dressing area ‘ to apply his make – up as the time nears for his on- screen appearance, Graif pauses outside of the editing room. He politely asks his editor Shannon to call him if anyone scores. The Capitals and Bruins are still tied at one goal and it is Shannon’s job to find the footage Paul will use in his sportscast. If something changes while Paul is on – air.

” I need the time of the goal and the name of the players involved!” Says Graif as he meticulously adds a blue and white tie to his wardrobe. ” It’s all about time! The rest falls into place …!”

Running from his duties at K103 and anchoring the sports occasionally at CTV – does not leave much time for the single Graif to do things for himself. When he does have a few moments, it is spent with his five year old daughter.

The sole occasion he would like time to stand still …

Who’s in Goals ?

“Who’s in Goals … ?”

Patrick Roy is considering becoming the coach of the Canadiens. Serge Savard wants to make sure he knows what he’s getting into …

Savard: Strange as it may seem, they give hockey players nowadays very peculiar names.

Roy: Funny names?

Savard: Nicknames, nicknames. Now, on the St. Louis team – we have Who’s in goals, What’s on left wing and I Don’t Know is the center …

Roy: That’s what I want to find out. I want you to tell me the names of the fellows on the St. Louis team.

Savard: I’m telling you. Who’s in goals, What’s on left wing and I Don’t Know is the center.

Roy: You know the fellows’ names?

Savard: Yes.

Roy: Well, then who’s in goals?

Savard: Yes.

Roy: I mean the fellow’s name in goals.

Savard: Who.

Roy: The fellow playin’ goals …

Savard: Who.

Roy: The guy in goals.

Savard: Who is in goals.

Roy: Well, what are you askin’ me for?

Savard: I’m not asking you–I’m telling you. Who is in goals.

Roy: I’m asking you–who’s in goals?

Savard: That’s the man’s name.

Savard: Yes.

Roy: When you pay off the goalie every month, who gets the money?

Savard: Every dollar of it. And why not, the man’s entitled to it.

Roy: Who is?

Savard: Yes.

Roy: So who gets it?

Savard: Why shouldn’t he? Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.

Roy: Who’s wife?

Savard: Yes. After all, the man earns it.

Roy: Who does?

Savard: Absolutely.

Roy: Well, all I’m trying to find out is what’s the guy’s name in goals?

Savard: Oh, no, no. What is on left wing.

Roy: I’m not asking you who’s on left wing !

Savard: Who’s in goals!

Roy: St. Louis has a good second line?

Savard: Oh, absolutely.

Roy: The right winger’s name?

Savard: Why.

Roy: I don’t know, I just thought I’d ask.

Savard: Well, I just thought I’d tell you.

Roy: Then tell me who’s playing right wing ?

Savard: Who’s playing goals.

Roy: Stay out of the crease. The right winger’s name?

Savard: Why?

Roy: Because.

Savard Oh, he’s the back – up goalie.

Roy: Wait a minute. You got a second centerman on this team?

Savard: Wouldn’t this be a fine team w i t h o u t a second center man?

Roy: Tell me the centerman’s name.

Savard: Tomorrow.

Something says it will be a very long summer …
