Don’t Worry … Be Happy!

Darche is Done!

It’s sad really …

Why does a guy like Mathieu Darche have to be blessed with no natural skills?

image

Jeff Whyte – Darche’s bantam coach, parlayed the same sentiment in a conversation we had last year. According to Whyte, Mathieu had to work very hard to get better all the time.

“Even though he was the captain and had a strong sense of the game, he was one of the weaker skaters on the team. It was sad because he was the best team player and the most gung – ho guy on the team.”

If not for Darche’s work ethic, a stop in Montreal would never have happened. Mathieu would have stalled in one of the many AHL destinations that was part of his climb to a regular spot in Montreal.

Even then, would Darche have played as long in Montreal if his name was Mathieu Smith?

In an environment begging for a French player to calm the masses, Darche was at the right place at the proper time. Once Maxime Lapierre was dispatched to Vancouver, Mathieu’s place was secure due to his connaisance of the ‘mot’ poutine and his willingness to cook it as well.

In the Bergevin era with new guys like Geoffrion and White in the mix, guys who are younger and are blessed with more talent – Darche is expendable. No use in Hab management over – welcoming their offer to the now free agent. In other words – an older hen can lay eggs but a younger one can lay more …

Mathieu comes from a great background. His father is a doctor and his brother J.P is currently studying to be one at the University of Kansas. This following a sucessful career in the CFL and NFL as a longsnapper.

Whatever happens to Mathieu, if a team picks him up or he retires sooner than he thought, one thing is certain. Mathieu Darche will be remembered as a hard working guy who did everything he was asked to do.

The only sad thing is he did not lift a cup in his hometown. Yet.

According to Mr. Whyte, Darche will make an excellent coach one day …

Whyte should know. He and Mathieu won a couple of championships together …

Thank you Mathieu and good luck!

Red Fisher’s Top Ten Reasons for Leaving

As most are aware …image

Red Fisher hung up his ‘writing skates’. Mr.Fisher began writing on hockey in 1900, his first story? Guy Lafleur’s great Grandfather’s first goal.

Fisher wrote; ” Damien Lafleur dried out several Indians before finally lifting the cowpuck past an unsuspecting Moose”.

With those words a legacy commenced until the 2012 season.

Here are the top ten reasons Red Fisher decided to quit his post as hockey ‘s greatest sportswriter…

10. Too many Russian names – not enough backspace keys …

9. ‘ If Gauthier speaks to you, and only you’ – it is time to leave!

8. After fifty years, is it too much to ask for the key to the executive washroom?

7. With the addition of Bergevin, Dudley, Mellanby, Brisebois, Lapointe, Lefebvre, Jodoin and Gallant … no way to get quotes since THEY ARE ALL ROOKIES!

6. Really, really wanted Roy to coach!

5. ‘One sec dear …’ Not working with the wife anymore …

4. ‘State of the art glasses’ discontinued by manufacturer.

3. First couple of years bearable but really, the captain of the Canadiens should not have to stand on a box when giving an interview.

2. Hearing aid too strong for Bell Center music …

And the number one reason Red Fisher retired …?

1. Really ‘boring’ since the Kostitsyns left!

Good luck Mr. Fisher – you will be missed!

Marc Bergevin to be Announced as the Montreal Canadiens’ New G.M.

The Montreal Canadiens have hired Marc Bergevin as their new General Manager.

Marc Bergevin

The 46-year-old Bergevin arrives from the Chicago Blackhawks’ front office where he held a variety of positions for the past seven seasons. Bergevin also played for the Blackhawks, one of eight teams for which he played during a 20-year career.

Marc Bergevin spent his seventh season with the Blackhawks as Assistant General Manager after being named to the position on June 15, 2011. Bergevin has held various other positions in the organization, most recently as Director of Player Personnel.

Bergevin, a Montreal native, served as an Assistant Coach on Joel Quenneville’s staff during the 2008-09 campaign. He also spent three years on the Blackhawks scouting staff, including one as Director of Pro Scouting during the 2007-08 season.

Originally selected by the Blackhawks in the third round (59th overall) of the 1983 Entry Draft, Bergevin spent 20 seasons in the National Hockey League as a defenseman, collecting 181 points (36G, 145A) in 1,191 games with Chicago (1984-89), the New York Islanders (1989-90), Hartford Whalers (1990-92), Tampa Bay Lightning (1992-95, 2002-03), Detroit Red Wings (1995-96), St. Louis Blues (1996-2001, 2001-02), Pittsburgh Penguins (2000-01, 2002-04) and Vancouver Canucks (2003-04).

Bergevin also skated in 80 career Stanley Cup Playoffs contests with five different teams, recording nine points (3G, 6A) and 52 penalty minutes.

Bergevin and his wife, Ruth, reside in Chicago and have three children: two sons, Wes and Rhett, and a daughter, Elle.

Rick Keene’s Top Ten Montreal Canadiens’ Goals

I am forty – six. My memory is somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty – five.

In the time I have been a Montreal Canadiens’ fan – there have been at least ten goals the team has scored that stand out in the archives of my mind.

Thanks to Kevin from Habs Eye on the Prize for asking me for the list.

Please visit his outstanding site. In the near future – lists and memories from many sports personalities in Montreal will be added to his site …

Without further ado; here are my top ten Montreal Canadien goals!

10. Alexei Kovalev – February 19, 2008

After surrendering five straight goals to the Rangers, the Habs seemed to have dug a hole that promised to get bigger. The match was half over and a five goal deficit equaled disaster and embarrassment. Then something happened. One goal led to another and as quick as a startled bird departs a telephone wire – the Habs tied the game. To add dramatic effect for upcoming highlight reels; Kovalev netted the winner and ended up on his backside, legs in the air, as the Canadiens capped off the biggest comeback in the team’s history.

9. Chris Nilan – 1989 Flyers – Habs

Nilan’s goal was not a game winner. Nilan’s goal was not important in a game the Habs led 3 – 1 in the third period. What made Knuckles goal a notch in my memory was the way he did it. A fighter – not known for his scoring prowess, Chris took a Larry Robinson pass and skated alone on a breakaway. Channeling Guy Lafleur, Knuckles deked the Flyers’ goalie and easily placed the puck in the net. It was a defining moment. It was Chris Nilan sending a statement; ” I can play hockey too … Ya know !”

8. Eric Desjardins – 1993 Stanley Cup finals against L.A.

The game will be remembered for two things; Marty McSorley‘s illegal stick and Eric Desjardins. The Habs’ defenceman scored probably the Habs’ most important goal in their improbable run to the Cup. The Kings and McSorley were penalized with under two minutes to go in the third period. A Los Angeles victory would have sent them home with a 2-0 series lead. Habs’ coach Jacques Demers pulled goalie Roy and Desjardins scored the equalizer from atop the face-off circle. The Forum went absolutely nuts as the teams headed to overtime. Desjardins scored the winner in the extra period to become the only defenceman in NHL history to net a hat trick in the playoffs as the Habs won 3 – 2!

7. Jean Beliveau – His 500th goal.

On February 11, 1971 – M. Beliveau netted the 500th goal of his career. I was six years old and I remember it like yesterday. There was not a televised Habs’ game that I missed on television – before the days of five games a night on any given channel. Beliveau’s goal was my first recollection of feeling proud. He was my Montreal Canadien and the numbers ‘ 5-0-0 ‘ flashed on my t.v. screen in ( at the time ) ‘ state of the art ‘ graphics. His feat re – enforced my idea of becoming a hockey player and the next 500 goal scorer for the Habs.

6. John Leclair – 1993 Stanley Cup finals against L.A.

The teams were in Los Angeles tied at one game apiece. The series and Cup could have gone both ways. Once again – the pair of finalists headed to overtime, a domain ‘ owned ‘ by the Canadiens in this playoff year. John Leclair, the Vermont native with the French name – took matters onto his own stick and scored the winner just :34 into the extra time.Another miracle in the Habs’ miraculous run!

5. John Leclair – 1993 Stanley Cup finals against L.A.

Following his heroics in game three – Leclair once more scored the winner in overtime in game four. This feat made him the second player in history ( aside from Rocket Richard )to score two overtime goals in the finals. Leclair left his mark in Montreal forever …

4. Claude Lemieux – 1986 Adams Division finals against Hartford

Overtime game seven. The teams displayed the prowess of two heavyweights battling for a title fight. Back and forth the series went. No team gathering control. The Habs were filled with rookies and did not seem quite sure of their identity. Lemieux grabbed the puck behind the net and headed to the hash marks. Turning, he seemingly ‘willed’ the puck with a backhand over goalie Mike Liut’s left shoulder. The goal not only sending the Habs to the next round ( and eventual Cup ), it was the goal that instilled confidence in the young team. A turning point for many Habs’ rookies like Roy and Lemieux.

3. Brian Skrudland1986 Stanley Cup finals against Calgary

Mike McPhee and Brian Skrudland were the modern day Mario Tremblay and Doug Riseborough on the Habs in the mid to late eighties. No two players worked harder at checking the other team’s top lines while adding an offensive punch. All that hard work paid off as McPhee and Skrudland headed into the Calgary zone on a two- on- one. A play that sent Skrudland into the history books. It was game two in Calgary. The Habs startled the Flames by competing after being dominated 5- 2 in game one. McPhee poked – checked the puck at center, sending him and Skrudland toward Mike Vernon, the Flames’ goalie. McPhee orchestrated a perfect pass to Skrudland and Brian tapped the puck in just nine seconds into overtime. The fastest overtime goal in NHL history and the Habs won the next three games to bring home their twenty – third  Stanley Cup.

2. Scott Gomez – February 9, 2012

I remember where I was when John Lennon was shot and killed. I will always remember where I was when Scott Gomez scored his first goal in over a year. Why is this number two on the list? Because the goal, contrary to all the other goals – is a symbol in my mind to the lowest point in my memories of the Canadiens’ franchise. Any moment in history is defined by good and bad. Gomez’ goal the most famous of the infamous. A story that will be told to generations to come. The day Scott Gomez earned his seven million dollar salary.

And the number one Montreal Canadiens’ goal?

1. Guy Lafleur – ‘ Too many men on the ice goal ‘ May 10, 1979

The Bruins were playing the Habs in another chapter of their long and bitter rivalry. The Bruins were on the verge of upsetting the Habs in the semi- finals. Up 4 – 3 with just over two minutes left in the third period; Boston got called for too many men on the ice. The Canadiens desperate for a goal and it showed. One of the most feared offences fumbled the first few shifts. Sticks were pressed a little too tight until Larry Robinson grabbed the puck and headed into the zone. Just inside the blue line, ‘ Big Bird ‘ dropped a pass to Lafleur who was skating just behind. Seventy – four seconds remained on the clock. An eight inch opening lay to Bruin goalie Gilbert’s right. Lafleur unleashed his patented slapshot. The rest … History as they say as the teams headed to overtime and a 5 – 4 Canadien victory. Lafleur’s goal the base for an Yvon Lambert overtime winner and an eventual Stanley Cup against the Rangers …

Please – send me your top ten list!

If you need a magician and an outstanding entertainer – give Kid Mercury a call! Not only will he entertain your kids or corporate party – his memories from the Forum as the Canadiens’ unofficial mascot from 1985 – 1995 will blow your mind!

In Hindsight … Martin should have Stayed – as Coach

Believe it or not – Rick Keene is wrong on occasion.

Not often , yet often enough to sleep on the porch on a cold and rainy night periodically. What … ? How can that be …? You ask as concern replaces a grin.

Let me explain …

Les Canadiens de Montreal possessed a record of 13 – 12 – 7. One game and a hiccup above the tidewater mark of a sporting team’s success. A man named Jacques , conceived by Mr. and Mrs. Martin , led the team as their coach.

Myself , along with throngs of G.M ‘s everywhere in la Belle Province – cried for Martin’s head to be placed on a platter of purgatory. ‘Surely – les Canadiens , an equipe that sailed to newer heights in recent years , were better than this . Martin must be the villain in la ville de Montreal …’

We cried from Gatineau to Gauthier’s house. Martin’s stifling and boring defensive system was caging the team’s offensive stars. Enough we cried ! And we cried , and we cried , and we cried until tears were enough to dispatch the former Peterborough Petes‘ coach from behind the bench.

Well , guess what ?

The Montreal team’s offensive stars were meant to be caged. If not , their release may have caused death by boredom. ‘Death to Smoochy‘ as the kids in the city stayed awake to watch the Habs while their parents slept – the elders unable to replace the Flyin’ Frenchmen of old. Young men and women unaware of the visions of Brian Gionta that jumped fences in the minds of their parents as Smurfs replaced sheep in Mom and Dad‘s worst nightmares.

As Randy Cunneyworth discovered , a team such as this required Martin’s logic – Martin’s lethargy. Jumpin’ Jacques was not a fool with his foot – long rush mentality. All along , Martin kept the team in transition to hide the truth and dispel the myth of the Montreal Canadiens. A myth that the team may score.

If the not-so-mighty Habs retained Martin as coach , the team would have carried on boringly as a game over .500 hockey club. If so – their record today would stand somewhere around forty – two wins and another twenty – odd overtime or shoot- out losses. Do the math . Ninety points placed the Capitals in the playoffs. Under coach Martin ; ninety – three or four points were possible .

Hello Subban – bye , bye Semin ! ‘ Ovie ‘ would not have a chance to titillate Thomas. Instead , a Habs – Bruins repeat of last season could have been an Hors d ‘ oeuvre to a Stanley Cup – a cup sautéed just right for the palates of the people from Pierrefonds.

A first – round match with Gorges , Pacioretty and Markov in the line – up against the Bruins. A championship team that ‘ squeaked by ‘ nos Canadiens last year. Bobby Orr‘s alma mater would have been exactly what Pacioretty ‘s doctors ordered for the Habs. A confidence builder, a chance of redemption – a payback filled with pride.

Gill , Kostitsyn and Cammalleri may have remained with the club if Martin remained. Almost the same team that went to the Eastern Conference finals two years ago. Better than this season …?

Believe it or not …
————————————————-

And Then There was One …

Wow … !

What a season it has been …

Starting in the pre – season , things did not appear happy in Hab – land. A losing record to start the season to go along with a losing record as the season progressed.

Assistant coaches let go , head coaches fired and newly – appointed coaches dismissed before they started to coach . A veteran presence traded for a veteran potato head and a diva dismissed to a vacant hotel – during the course of a game , no less.

A pre – deadline deal sending a giant for a bloodline by the name of Geoffrion. A Russian exodus to a Stanley Cup contender in return for a return to sender. For the love of Mary – has anyone checked on the health of Youppi … ? Following the death of Gary Carter , the poor mascot must be suffering from the shakes …

It has been – that type of year .

Oh and …

All this with Andrei Markov and his missing knee. At one point , the Habs’ doctors , the Habs’ brass and the Habs themselves knew not where their defenceman was … Let us give the Russian the benefit of the doubt here . With all the pollution that circled the club like a Toronto Maple Leaf cloud – Andrei got going while the going was bad ! ?

An AWOL amongst the AWOL …

The Last Supper

On Saturday , April 7 – 2012 – the Montreal Canadiens will play the final game of their season. A game which finds their opponents , the Maple Leafs , above them in the standings. Not that this says much of the Toronto team as they held a playoff spot not that long ago. Think of the Boston Red Sox of last season , add a few skates and less pine tar – voila … ! I give you the bunch that Brian Burke broke …

Les Canadiens are better off than a Leaf team that arrives limping into town. Montreal has better goaltending , better defence and … um … how about those Cubs ?

In reality , Montreal and Toronto are in different sorts of messes . The Habs need secondary  scoring and the Leafs need some people to stop the opposition’s secondary line from scoring. Heck – the Leafs require someone to stop the opposition’s water boy from scoring !

As the puck drops , visions of top picks in the lottery will be dancing in the eyes of Brian Burke and ( insert name here ). The draft lottery is on Tuesday . Unless a miracle ensues and the Montreal consortium of Savard / Molson hires a fit G.M before – all indications point to a Savardian – spin on things as the season ebbs into spring.

Brian Burke should be looking for goaltending as James Reimer and Jonas Gustavsson have proven the team would be better off with a one – legged and in turn , a one – padded goalie protecting the Toronto twine. Then again – it is Brian Burke. Only the blue and white hamster that rides the wheel inside of Burke’s head is aware of how the man thinks  ( or doesn’t ).

The tandem of Savard and Molson , on the other skate – should be looking at a forward. Forget the past and a collection of first round defencemen that would make Doug Harvey proud. If Bobby Orr‘s second cousin is available , great ! Pass him by boys and let Burke bring him on a boat ride on Lake Ontario to sign him. Twenty years of defensive picks in Montreal have proven that Stanley is fed up ! Stanley adored Lafleur – not Komisarek !

The Leafs and the Habs will be skating on  a Saturday soiree for the final time this season.

The next time we see the two teams compete against one another – it will be different . A guy with the name of Yakupov may streak down the right wing at the Bell Center , elude Leaf Captain Dion Phaneuf with a quick inside – outside move and then rifle a quick snap-shot toward the Toronto net. Suddenly , out of nowhere – a glove grabs the puck like a frog’ s tongue trapping a fly.

The glove may belong to a goalie with the name  Subban …

Wow … !

What a season that would be …

Chris Chelios is Gone and I Never Got to Say Goodbye

It was a cold January day outside of the Montreal Forum in 1984 …

I was standing beside the players’ entrance waiting to catch one of my beloved Habs as they arrived for a game that night against the Hartford Whalers. There were a few adults speckled among the crowd which consisted mainly of kids between the ages of ten and fifteen. Photos and scraps of paper filled their young hands as they anxiously awaited the  scribbles of their favorite players.

As the icy wind carved blue streaks into normally pink lips – a car pulled into the driveway. It stopped just before the aluminum garage door that was the gateway to the bowels of  hockey’s most famous building. The rear doors of the black sedan opened up and three players emerged – Tom Kurvers, Peter Svoboda and Chris Chelios.

One of the kids in a group that consisted of his peers ran toward them leaving his friends momentarily alone to fight the cold.” Hey Chelios !” He yelled with a smile . The group started toward the trio – pens and pencils waving in the brisk air. One of the other kids approached Tom Kurvers and said ; ” Mr. Kurvers – may I have an autograph? ” Kurvers looked at the young man and said… ” Sorry kid – I do not have time.”

Chris Chelios heard what Kurvers said and before you knew it – Chelios was standing next to Kurvers as the pair faced the autograph – seeking young man. Chelios grabbed the pen and paper from the pre-teen and with an angry sideways glance toward Kurvers – replied ; “ Of course he’ll sign your paper – what’s your name kid … ?”

Not only did Kurvers sign an autograph for that kid, Chelios made sure that Kurvers and Svoboda signed autographs for all the kids in the group. I realized then , Chris Chelios was a special player.

The End of an Era…

Drafted in 1981 by the Habs – Chris Chelios officially retired at the age of forty – eight.A twenty-six year career finalized – becoming the second oldest player behind Gordie Howe to play in the NHL.

“I will never forget my start. I had one point in my first 14 games with the Canadiens. I never even unpacked my bags because I thought I was going to the minors, Serge Savard and ( head coach ) Jacques Lemaire kept playing me and I finally figured it out.  It also didn’t hurt that I had Patrick Roy behind me for the next six years, so thank you, Patrick – a good friend and teammate.”

Chelios played for nine seasons in a Habs uniform, winning the Norris Trophy in 1989 and a Stanley Cup in 1986. Unfortunatley for Habs fans he was traded in 1991 to the Black Hawks for Denis Savard – a player that was originally passed over for Doug Wickenheiser in the 1980 draft. Although the trade is considered to be one of the worst in Hab history, Denis Savard did win a Stanley Cup in Montreal while Chelios did not obtain the same goal in Chicago despite winning two more Norris Trophies in his hometown – the Windy City.

Never to be confused with an Angel – Chelios was outspoken and marched to the beat of his own drum.A drum not unlike that of the Energizer Bunny’s as Chelios would often hit the Montreal nightclubs and keep going and going and going . The Habs – an organization that prides itself with an image that is respected globally, finally had enough of Chelios’ shenanigans and the trade to Chicago was finalized.

A Long Career

Following a strict regimen, one that included a forty-five minute jaunt on an exercise bike inside a sauna, Chris Chelios’ NHL career spanned three decades with Montreal, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta. To put it into perspective – Sidney Crosby was not born when ‘Chelly’ made his first tour under the Stanley Cup banners on Forum ice . It was there – Chelios began his ‘ schooling’.

“I was sitting in bars and restaurants with legends – the Richard brothers, Jean Beliveau, Yvan Cournoyer – listening to their stories about when they played; what it took to win . How all of them put the team in front of any individual play. There was no selfishness in that group of players and I was learning from the best, I always said playing for the Canadiens was like getting a Harvard degree in hockey and I was very fortunate to start my career there.”

Chelios’ final exam in a Montreal uniform came when he co-Captained the 1989 version of the team into the finals against the Calgary Flames. That team was the best Canadiens team to play since the 1978-79 team that won it’s last of four Cups. They ranked second only to Calgary in regular season points with 113 and lost the Cup in six games to a Flames squad that was just that much better. It was during that play -off run when Chelios perhaps left his permanent mark in Canadiens and NHL history – at least on Youtube.

The Habs were playing the dreaded Flyers at home , Chelios hit Brian Propp from behind and head – first into the boards. A hit that was considered to be dirty and Propp was helped from the ice and missed the remainder of the series. Chelios was a marked man. Because it was the play-offs , the Flyers could ill afford to retaliate and risk giving a superior Habs squad a two, five or ten minute advantage. Then came game six…

With his team trailing 3-2 in the series and 4-2 on the scoreboard in the game’s final minutes, Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall left the crease and slammed Chelios into the boards. A retaliation for Chelios’ illegal yet unpenalized hit on Philadelphia’s Brian Propp in Game 1.

Chelios crumpled to the ice ; the Flyers goalie continued to beat number twenty – four until the referees were able to pull the Flyer goalie off.  Hextall – eyes glazed ‘ a la Charles Manson ‘, wanted to get at Chelios and in a move that made everyone wonder about Hextall’s sanity – the Flyer goalie’s tongue flicked back , forth and around for two minutes as the linesman kept the pair apart. For his actions, Hextall received a match penalty and was suspended for the first 12 games of the following season.

The Third Period

Exactly ten seasons after that brush with death – Chelios’ address changed from ‘The House of Blues’ to Motown as he joined a Detroit team on the verge of winning a Stanley Cup. An accomplishment achieved in 2002 and again in 2007.

Following a ten year career with Detroit, Chelios signed on with the Manitoba Moose joining ex-teammate and former captain of the Habs – Mike Keane. Chelios then signed on with the Atlanta Trashers playing in seven games , adding zero points and a -2 rating. After playing in 1,651 games, scoring 185 goals and adding 763 assists for a total of 948 points – Chelios realized that he no longer had any gas in the tank. The future Hall of Famer joined the Detroit Red Wings management staff and one of his duties will be to work with the Wings young defensive prospects.

Chelios played in two Canada Cups, two World Cups, four Olympic Games and two World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He won three Stanley Cups, three Norris Trophies and played in fifteen All Star games.

I hope that kid outside of the Forum on that cold January day in 1984 kept that piece of paper.

Goodbye Chris Chelios and thank you!

Russian Roulette with Roy

I’ve seen the future, baby:

it is murder

Leonard Cohen

These are the vowels and syllables the next General Manager and coach of the Montreal Canadiens will have to deal with when they take the wheel of the storied club’s agenda.

Never mind the real context of these words …

There are so many possibilities and names being bandied about ; a longing for the simpler daze of Jacques Martin somehow seems appealing. Serge Savard is heading a consortium of himself and Molson to discover the ideal man to lead the Habs . The qualifications of the chosen man , ideally , would have an instinct which would bring the proper coach to Montreal as well . Given Serge Savard ‘s place in the mix , an edge to Patrick Roy as coach is the bet that a betting man would place.

There is no – one with the exception of Roy’s teammates , that are aware of Patrick’s will to win better than Savard. Aside from that ;

  • Serge Savard built a winner as G. M in this city and  has the vision to build another. There are two Russians available in the upcoming draft – one of which ( Mikhail Grigorenko ) , is currently playing for Roy’s Remparts in the QMJHL. Roy knows his player more than anyone and this will give the Habs’ brass an inside take on the Russian’s ability and give insight to Grigorenko ‘s weaknesses. If Roy says no – a Doug Wickenheiser may be avoided in lieu of a Denis Savard ( Nail Yakupov).
  • Patrick Roy also coached Alexander Radulov beginning in 2004. Radulov is currently playing in Nashville and has made no secret that he wants out of the land of country music. Under Roy’s tutelage – Radulov was named the most valuable player in the 2006 Memorial Cup, a season in which he had 207 points in 85 QMJHL games, including playoffs. Radulov will be available this summer – before the draft in which the Habs are guaranteed a top five pick. Patrick Roy could easily entice Radulov to Montreal. Roy could entice him if  Roy was working for the Canadiens.

Radulov

This is where Serge Savard steps in …
M. Savard’s experience as a G.M and successful business man , will allow him the savvy to swing some deals before the draft. If the Habs are relegated to the number four pick – an experienced Savard could somehow fan dangle a move. A trade  which may send Gomez and Kaberle to better places for Canadiens’ fans and in turn – send a Russian draft pick to Montreal. Add Radulov from Nashville – a team that appears to enjoy dealing with the Habs    -  a one – two punch of Russians could be the compliment to a Desharnais – Cole – Pacioretty line.

Yakupov

Suddenly , Montreal will legitimately have six top six forwards to throw at the opposition. The Habs’ scoring would jump a goal a game and given the number of games the team lost by one goal this season – that one goal a game would inevitably send them to the playoffs . Add a healthy Markov and Gionta , a better – coached team , stability and communication from above to a solid defence corps already in place – the Stanley Cup appears closer.
Carey Price would be happier and presumably a fire would be lit in his belly from Roy. Tough guys Staubitz and White have already made opponents realize that this is not Jacques Martin’s father’s team . Travis Moen is no slouch with a stick and his fists and Rene Bourque is the same as Moen with more talent in the stick.
Jared Tinordi , with his  6’7″ mean streak , has a good shot of making the defence corps next season and Emelin will only get stronger at knocking players on their rear ends in his sophomore season .

Roy with Grigorenko - Explosive combination ?

There’ll be phantomsThere’ll be fires on the road

The Curse of Youppi …

The curse of Youppi began when many terrible events occurred after the discovery of Rejean Houle‘s brain.

Legend has it that anyone who dared to open Houle’s head – would suffer the wrath of Youppi . Because mascots have been associated with many magical powers throughout history, some of the mascots found from baseball were ground into a fine powder and sold as mystical mascot powder. It’s believed the powder had magical healing powers and it wasn’t until the discovery of Houle’s brain and the hype of the media that things would change forever.

The hype began when Mario Tremblay , the coach of the Habs , left goalie Patrick Roy in the crease for nine goals against the Red Wings on Dec 2 1995. The Habs – died shortly after.

The path to the team’s demise began in the Fall of 1995 when the team’s President , Ronald Corey , was kissed on the cheek by the Montreal Expos‘ mascot Youppi during an Expos game. In the ensuing days – he further aggravated the ‘ curse ‘ by appointing Rejean Houle as G.M and Mario Tremblay as coach. The team soon became infected and everyone associated with the squad became ill. At the exact moment the Habs died – the lights inside Jean Beliveau‘s house mysteriously went out.

Once the Montreal Canadiens died , the media went wild with stories of their death. They claimed Youppi wanted vengeance and incurred a mascot’s curse, which targeted those who had entered Corey’s office. Not only did the death of the Habs get all the people in an uproar but other stories began to surface as well. Of the stories that surfaced, two remain prominent. One of the stories is that a cobra killed Maurice Richard in 2000. The Rocket discovered Houle’s brain in 1999 and the cobra was a gift from Corey to Richard once Mr.Corey learned of Richard’s discovery. The other story is that Patrick Roy’s dog howled and dropped dead at two in the morning when Rejean Houle was hired as G.M.

What is interesting is that Youppi lived another decade as the Expos’ mascot before joining the Canadiens as their mascot. So what happened to Ronald Corey during all this hype and the years following ?Corey has spent the last years recording every artifact found in the basement of the Pepsi Forum. Why didn’t he suffer the curse of Youppi and die ? He was, after all, the first to open Houle’s brain …

Did Youppi really unleash a curse? New findings are showing that bacteria on the wall of Houle’s brain might have been the cause of the curse. The bacteria would release spores into the air allowing it to be breathed. This in turn caused people who came into contact with Houle to become ill. Could this be what killed The Habs ? It appears this could have contributed to their demise, as well as the fact the team did not draft well.

Whether Youppi’s curse is fact or fiction, this story seems to interest people even today. The myth of the curse has remained with Youppi and continues to make people question as to whether the curse was really unleashed and if Youppi spreads his ‘ magic ‘ at every home game. What is known is that when you mix propaganda, facts, and hype you get a story that can be exciting. It all really comes down to one question. Do you believe in the curse of Youppi ?

Scott Gomez has a Twin …?

No need to go into details about Scott Gomez. Bottom line … ? Overpaid !

Is there anyone else on the Habs ‘ roster who gets paid a lot of money for next to nothing ?

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension— a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into the Twilight Zone.

This man spends most of his work time sitting around and watching his teammates work.

Forget the Beer – A White Russian Please …?

It has been a long time since the Montreal Canadiens got drunk.

Sure the team , or rather – the players , are out and about partying. Sure there have been many nights when Les Habitants have been spotted in the city ‘ s clubs. Drinking, carrying on and being ‘ boys ‘. The Canadian Canadiens drink beer, the American Habs drink shots, the Europeans down wine and the Russians drink Vodka.  Following a convincing 4-1 win in Vancouver last night , the team woke up with a hangover . The  benefits of a White Russian

The Habs have had  a few white russians skating the Bell Center since their star defenceman ; Andrei Markov , disappeared into the boards an eternity ago. Kostitsyn – Andrei,  was the main guy yet in the words of ‘ The Dude ” in the Big Lebowski ;  Hey, careful, man, there’s a beverage here! “

More times than not , brother Andrei – despite his size , skated like prized china in a bull shop. Kostitsyn played like so many Russians once they were given money and cars to play in the NHL. Flashes of skill dotting intermittent flashes of brilliance spawned by special talent. This is where Markov separates himself from the мужчины (muzhchíni).

In a ten year career in Montreal, the good brother Andrei – has seldom taken a shift off. He is the type of player who loves to play hockey and tries to improve with every game. Few players in the history of our glorious sport have skated with a sixth sense. ‘ Eyes in the back of Gretzky’s head ‘ type of guys. The men who skate with NHL boys. The individuals who are above the pettiness of wondering how to skate, pass or shoot. Instead they are thinking what happens if – what happens when – what happens …?

Lemieux of the Mario kind had it. His pal in Pittsburgh – Jaromir ( move like Jagger ) had it. A Concussed Crosby hopefully still has it. The shame with Andrei Markov is that no one save for a few individuals ” got ” what  Markov had over the years in a Habs uniform.

Mr. Markov returned to the mix last night on a team that has played like a bunch of drinking boys at a frat party trying to pick up chicks.  Sometimes they hit , sometimes they got lucky yet more often than not – they went home empty-handed. One hand was what they used on too many evenings as the members of the Habs lay in their beds. Alone. Despondent. Dreams of the playoffs – nightmares of the worse kind.

Is Markov ‘s return to the Canadiens at such a time the proper decision ? Why risk an injury with just over ten games left in a season that is headed nowhere fast ? Another four months of a steady rehabilitation process surly the proper recipe for a tasty white russian ?

According to Markov himself – and any great athlete will concur ; it is time to play or craziness will set in. This is what separates a great player from the Alexandre Daigles of the world. Markov’s itchiness is the same itchiness which had him injured in the first place. Competiveness is the name for Markov’s infliction and it is something that will not go away. It is what got him to the NHL and it is what made him rise to the top echelons of the defensive core in the entire league.

Markov is making more money than an entire continent of Russian militia. Andrei is aware that pundits, fans and general managers across the league believe that Pierre Gauthier is doing crack in his high – rise office. They believe Gauthier erred on the side of crack-tion by signing Andrei to a three year deal . A huge contract signed by a limping Markov.

Markov is not playing to aid Gauthier’s public image. The thirty – four year old from Voskresensk, Russia is not playing because he has grown tired of the Habs head athletic therapist Graham Rynbend. Andrei Markov is playing because he can.

Lets hope the team continues to get drunk …

Montreal lost to Toronto …

Not because the Maple Leafs are more talented than the Habs. The Habs lost because Randy Carlyle beat Randy Cunneyworth with experience. When push came to shove in the final period – Carlyle’s decisions proved quicker and more efficient. Another sign the Habs need a coach.

That said …

In the past few months, my readership has doubled on this site. A fact that leaves me grateful as I attempt to discover employment as a writer on the Habs.

Ned Braden and the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals ( Parental Guidance Suggested ).

It was as a miraculous  a run that would ever be written in the Montreal sports‘ pages …

The Montreal Canadiens defied logic and kept the bars and restaurants deep in prosperity as they dove deeper into the play- offs. They did it with a combination of luck, determination and a mindset not usually heard of when it comes to victory.

As each series progressed ,whether it was Quebec, Buffalo or Les Islanders de New York – the players who skated for les bleu, blanc et rouge, willed their way to overtime and a chance to win.

Overtime is a scary time. One shot – a backhand,a snapshot or perhaps an errant pass, can win the game in a second. It does not matter to the puck who has the edge in the extra time. The vulcanized disc cheers not for Wayne Gretkzy or Patrick Roy. It goes along for the ride, regardless of who is favored or who is wearing the colors of the underdog…

Overtime is relentless …

After coming back from a two game deficit against their Quebec neighbors – les Habitants started a trend that had not been seen before or since. Eleven overtime victories carried the team to their 24th Stanley Cup and made even the most un- superstitious black cat believe in miracles.

Once the Sabres were dispatched in round two – the Canadien players almost to a man, wanted each game decided after sixty minutes. ‘ They were more comfortable’ they would say. ‘Something was in the air’ was the type of words that escaped their mouths just before they yelled victory to the cameras.

Was it Voodoo ? Was it karma ?

It may have been the simple fact the Habs opponents in the finals did not remove their clothes and dance on top of their nets … How could they … ?

Ned Braden was in Montreal

Slapshot 101

Ned Braden was a character in the movie Slapshot.Micheal Ontkean, the actor, portrayed Ned Braden .Ned Braden was a pussy …

Slapshot is on everyone sports fans’ top ten list of best sports movies of all-time. It is a yarn scripted by Nancy O’Dowd .Surprising a woman wrote the screenplay considering the foul language and sexist jokes. O’Dowd followed her brother’s team around and used her notes to write the screenplay for the movie.

The film follows the exploits of the Charleston Chiefs – a hockey team that could not win a game if their skating lives depended on it. Guided by their player-coach, Reg Dunlop ( played by Paul Newman),the team is bankrupt in the goal scoring department, the stands and the pocket-book of  a mysterious owner…

Enter the Hansons

A trio of brothers named Steve, Jeff and Jack . A threesome of terror ! A terrible mixture of ‘ how not to play hockey’ !

The Hanson Brothers

The Hansons , after riding the bench and playing with their toy cars in hotel rooms for the first weeks after joining their new team – are given the opportunity to play by coach Dunlop. It seems , the Hansons have their own idea on how to play hockey …

They fight, they hit people over the head with their sticks and cause havoc in the hockey rink ! All this before the game starts sometimes ! In the words of Chiefs sportscaster Jim Carr ; “ The fans are standing up to them! The security guards are standing up to them! The peanut vendors are standing up to them! And by golly, if I could get down there, I’d be standing up to them! “

Paul Newman ( aka the coach), decides the Hansons’ way is the right way and the team starts winning with abandon. Suddenly the seats in the arena are filled, the team has its own booster club that follows them on road games and for once – the team is making money. Everyone is happy right ? Nope . Ned Braden, the team’s star forward is miserable and he is causing coach Dunlop to have fits.

Ned Braden is the only guy on the team who went to college. Ned Braden does not believe in fighting or goon tactics. Ned Braden refuses to play dirty and Dunlop decides to bench him on several occasions. Ned Braden is called a pussy by Jim Carr and even his teammates start questioning his sexual orientation because of his non violent nature.

Braden ... A Fag ?

Reggie Dunlop: Well, maybe Braden’s a faggot, you ever think of that?
Denis Lemieux: No way, he got a big c*ck, like horse.

The Chiefs continue their winning ways and end up in the championship game amid all kinds of humor and sub-plots. When their opponents for the top trophy in the Federal League , the Syracuse Bulldogs, stockpile their team with goons to counter the Chiefs’ one-two-three punch – Dunlop decides to play old-time hockey.

Newman’s squad attempts to win by playing Toe Blake’s way. They try to beat their opponents by skating, passing and scoring. Given the nature of their ways – the Bulldogs pummel the Chiefs and the Charleston squad does not fight back. Enter Ned Braden …

The Chiefs’ leading scorer and resident ‘pussy ‘- takes matters into his own hands while his teammates are in the middle of a bench- clearing brawl.

A Victory Lap - dance ...?

Much to the delayed delight of the home crowd – Braden( with the help of the team’s marching band ), commences to remove all of his equipment. Ned Braden commits one of the most bizarre strip teases in sports and cinematic history. Finally – kicking his shin pads in the air from atop the net in his own zone.

The referees , fed up with the nonsense carried on by the Bulldogs – award the Chiefs the championship and Braden ( stripped to a jockstrap) carries the trophy in a victory lap in front of the appreciative, crazy crowd. A memorable conclusion to a memorable movie…

Celebrating the Habs’ Victory

A friend and I were downtown in a Montreal bar celebrating the Habs game two victory over the Los Angeles Kings at the Montreal Forum. A game which included the famous stick measurement call by the Montreal coach Jacques Demers. Marty McSorley was penalized for using an illegal stick and the Habs went on a power play down a goal with under five minutes to play in the third period. The Canadiens tied the game on a goal by Eric Desjardins and eventually won their 9th straight overtime game. A string of improbable victories which concluded with eleven overtime wins and a Stanley Cup championship.

1993 Stanley Cup Champions

The bar was filled to capacity and erupted in pure joy when the home team scored to even the series at one game apiece heading back to L.A. Everyone was having a great time – a terrible feeling lifted as our heroes gave hope once more …

My friend and I were caught up in the moment and the pitchers of beers flowed quite well. We were sitting on two stools next to the dance floor when my friend pointed out a movie star. Forgetting momentarily about the film Slapshot, my friend said ; “Hey ! Look ! It is Micheal Ontkean from the television show Twin Peaks !”

Micheal Ontkean ( Ned Braden ) played sheriff Truman in the David Lynch series Twin Peaks. A favorite show of my friend.

“You mean Ned Braden …?” I countered as a hockey fan .

“Yes …! ” Said my friend. ” It’s Micheal Ontkean !”

They say television adds ten pounds to an individual. If indeed it was Ontkean – that statement was true. He was a lot slimmer than his screen appearances and much older looking. “Slapshot was filmed in 1977 – this was 1993 …” ! I reminded myself …

Sherrif Harry S Truman

We argued for a while whether or not the man on the dance floor – obviously drunk and hitting on a girl half his age,  was Ned Braden / Truman . I concocted a plan. A way to discover once and for all if this guy was a hockey hero …

” When he goes to the bathroom …” I told my friend. ” I’ll find out ! I will ask questions that only Ontkean will know ….!” Several moments later – sure enough, the Chiefs’ leading scorer look-a-like stumbled off  towards the bathroom.

He was swaying to and fro at the urinal when I took up residence to his left . Exiting my own private part and waiting a few seconds – I said in a drunken firmness ;

” Do you have a big c*ck like a horse…? “

“Excuse me …? ” The man replied with befuddlement.

” My friend thinks you have a big c*ck like a horse – I am not sure so I followed you in here to find out …!? ” I knew my approach was wrong.

” Um…um….?” The man fumbled with his words. Alcohol and confusion the two important factors at the moment.

” Can I see some I. D …? ” I asked.

” My hands are kinda tied up at the moment…” He replied.

” Because you have a big c*ck like a horse …? ” I laughed with curiosity.

The guy tried to laugh yet nervousness was his closest friend. He finished doing his thing and we both walked toward the sink. The man reached into his pocket and withdrew a wallet. His hands shaking with nerves and booze. He handed me a driver’s licence…

Micheal Ontkean was the man’s name and he resided in California. Upon discovering he was Ned Braden – I peppered the poor soul with questions.

He was here to watch the Kings play the Habs. He was playing semi-pro hockey when a casting call went out for the movie Slapshot. Paul Newman could not skate when filming commenced yet learned quite well. The Hansons were crazy in life and he was enjoying his role on Twin Peaks.

Ontkean - Much older

“I gotta get your autograph …!? ” I said with enthusiasm.

We exited the bathroom and asked a barmaid for a pen and paper. Ontkean asked how i would like it signed. I did not care and told him to write what he wanted …

Several moments passed and he handed me the piece of paper …We shook hands and he went back to the dance floor to join his ‘ friend’. I opened the paper …

To Rick – Like a horse … Ned Braden

Trade with Purpose …

As the day ends and the night draws near – The Montreal Canadiens will play the Florida Panthers at 5 pm tonight in Florida. When the team returns home to play the Wild ( after a game against Tampa ) on March 1 , who will be skating for the Habs and who will not …?

If the team decides to rid themselves of Kostisyn and / or  Plekanec , they would be better off if a master plan was in effect. Or else – the team will be spinning their skates and end up in the exact position next year.

All indications appear that the team is now going for a top pick in the lottery. How else can the current three game skid be explained ? At the start of the week – the Habs were six points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final play-off spot. Losing to the Devils , the Stars and the Capitals and being out-scored 10 – 3 in the process, is not an indication of a hungry team.

If Molson et al have decided to re – build ( again), that is fine. Go for a first round pick in next season’s draft. It has been a long time since the Habs’s faithful have had something to be excited about. Add that player to the roster that contains bright young stars such as Subban, Leblanc, Tinordi, Diaz and Emelin. A vase in which to place the flowers in the organization that have yet to bloom …

Alter the club all you want fellas – please have a game plan for once …

Plekanec is willing to veto his no trade clause according to a report from Pat Hickey of the Gazette. Pleks has been a great player in Montreal – he has done everything that has been asked of him in turbulent times. Trade him if necessary yet trade him for a young -ish veteran that will compliment the rest of the youth.

Every Cup contender needs veterans to keep the ship level while the young guns learn their craft. This is the mistake Gauthier made when he failed to sign Hamrlik and Halpern and let Spacek go to Carolina for Kaberle.

Toughness

Next season – if the team goes via the way of the fountain of youth. Gionta and Cole  will be  the two veterans who will lead the young guns. If the team must trade Kostisyn and Pekanec they must upgrade to size and heart with a player who is between 25 – 30 years of age. Someone young enough and scary enough to instill some fear into opposing teams. Two elements that Kostisyn and Plekanec did not possess.

Look at all the Stanley Cup champions throughout history. The common denominator is talent , toughness and heart. The Habs have talent. Now they must trade or draft for some heart and grit.

These are the types of players that should be skating for the Habs on March 1 .

Gill Gone for Bloodline

The Habs sent 36-year-old veteran defensive defenseman Hal Gill to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Blake Geoffrion and Robert Slaney. The Canadiens also receive a second round pick in 2012.

Thanks Hal !

“Wow..what a day…its bitter sweet, going to miss my hometown of Nashville, but going to where it all started with my family…MONTREAL!!!” .

Those words from the mouth of Blake Geoffrion – the grandson of Hab legend Boom – Boom Geoffrion and the great – grandson of Howie Morenz. The 23 year old brings size to Montreal at 6’2 and is known to give out great body checks when needed.

Should Geoffrion play 40 games in the 2012 – 13 NHL season with the parent club, the Canadiens will also send the Predators, a 2013-fifth round pick.

Gill was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2012.  The Predators are a Stanley Cup contender and Gill’s experience will help their cause.

The Habs are increasing their size. They shipped oft-injured Cammalleri to Calgary for Rene Bourque and with the addition of two more physical players in Geoffrion and Slaney, the days of the smurfs appear to be finished. Slaney is also 6’2 and a physical left winger. What ? The Habs made a trade and it did not involve a defenceman !

By adding Geoffrion – what better way than to silence the lack of french canadian players on the team by signing the bloodline of two of the greatest french canadian players in franchise history ?

Blake Geoffrion

Tres bien M. Gauthier …tres bien !

Do Not Panic ! Part One

You lose, you gain—it’s all caprice. The omnipotence of caprice. The likelihood of reversal. Yes, the unpredictable reversal and its power.

Philip Roth, The Humbling

Cover of The Humbling

Believe it or not , the Montreal Canadiens are in a position of envy around the league right now. What is that you say ? Is Rick Keene on the sauce once again? Have the voices inside his head finally turned to the dark side ?

Before you call the boys carrying white coats with no elbow room – make a coffee, open a beer and read a while …Won’t ya ?

Let ‘ s take a look at the positives in the Habs organization instead of dwelling on the Gomez’, the beer prices and the general malaise that surrounds the club. If Gauthier or the new man that takes the reign of Le Club de Hockey Canadien plays his cards right; the future is very bright for the team. Starting with guys that have held the team in every game – here is an evaluation of the team’s brightest stars.

Carey Price

Price is young and talented. People are on him a bit because ‘According to them’ – he is having a sub – par season. First – let us place ourselves in his goalie skates. For a season and a half, playing the most minutes of any goalie in the league, Price has placed his team in a position to win. Game upon game – his buddies score less often than a man with a one inch penis. After a while – the phrase ‘ what the f*ck ‘ starts spinning inside his mask like a Micheal Jackson video shoot gone bad. . A player in his position should always optimize his talent yet a human being is a human being. Mr. Price has not called up Ronald Corey on his cell phone and demanded a trade. He may be wavering on his upcoming contract talks yet it is par for the hockey course. Carey Price has many years to play and win Stanley Cups and will evolve into an experienced veteran along the way.

Alexei Emelin

This guy is the real deal. Not quite through his first season in the NHL and this guy is improving by the game.Hard – hitting in the mold of Scott Stevens, he will not back away from anyone. There is no controversy with this kid, no bad comments and no negatives. Someone once said – if no one notices you then you are doing your job. Please stay hidden Alexei and try not to pay attention to all the crap that circles the club.

Josh Gorges

Thank the Lord for Craig Rivet. If San Jose had not been so keen on landing the former Hab defence man – our future captain wold not be here. Josh has and continues to demonstrate a maturity beyond his years. On and off the ice. He will not shy from the rough stuff yet obtains the ability to keep his anger in check. That anger will arise if one of his mates is on the receiving end of dirty play by an opposing player. Always coming to the defence of his pals. Josh Gorges face would look nice next to Guy Lapointe, Serge Savard and Robinson on the Habs’ dressing room wall. ‘ From failing hands we …’.

P.K Subban

Leave the dude alone ! He is the most creative and talented defence man to suit up for the Habs since Markov’s rookie year in 2001. Since Gauthier rid the team of two veterans, Spacek and Hamrlik, P.K has been asked to do everything. Powerplay, penalty kill and a leader on the team. Hello ….this is the guy’s sophomore season ! Tag all of his responsibilities along with the fact he is still on a learning curve and he is a victim of hate in most arenas – it is amazing the guy has not snapped. Nobody messed with Bobby Orr’s psyche , let P.K play hockey and let him be our Bobby Orr.

Raphael Diaz

Most predicted this guy would play the season in Hamilton. He surprised everyone in training camp, he surprised everyone in pre – season and he continues to surprise everyone well past Christmas. He is level headed, has a great shot and has shown an improving ability to take the man. Like Emelin – on most nights , he is not noticed . Like Emelin, his sophomore season will be better.

Andrei Markov

English: Josh Gorges of the Montreal Canadiens...

Regardless of all the negative press the guy and his knee attract – Markov remains the most talented defence man on the club and in the NHL. Perhaps the swelling and the second operation on his knee that has kept him out of the line-up all season is a blessing in disguise. Let him and his knee heal until the beginning of training camp next year. He will arrive in camp healthy and hungry to play. If all goes well – he will have a new found youth to his step which will only help the club and Subban, Diaz and Emelin.

Stay tuned for Part Two as we look at the forwards.

Part Three will look at the defencemen that should join the club next season and part four will examine the prospects that may join the forwards.

In the meantime …

Top Ten P.K Subban Trades

As the crucial point of the season commences – there is all kinds of trade talk.

The Montreal Canadiens are smack in the middle of these ‘exchanges’ as they cling to a shot at the playoffs. Will the team rid themselves of players such as Gill,Moen and Kostitsyn? In dismissing these types of players, the Habs could build a quality group of youth for the future.

Then again, Pierre Gauthier is at the helm so a used puck back is closer to the truth.

The reality of the Canadiens situation is they are caught in a tough position.Gone are the Smurf experimental days. Speed is part of their menu yet ‘ steak’ has replaced ‘chicken fingers’ as the team has realized that toughness is a more savory ingredient towards success.

The team requires more Erik Coles. Rene Bourque is the new Shayne Corson and if the Habs could accumulate more of these players – The Boston Bruins will be even more fearful of their division rivals than what they currently are.

There are rumors spinning around faster than a hamster in a wheel
concerning P.K Subban. He is not coachable, he is not liked by his teammates and he is too self – centered. Most G.M ‘s in the league will say straight out the Canadien rearguard’s name is never on the table when the trading cards are dealt. Most G.M’s publicly would say that
Mike Milbury did a good job. So – who knows what is up?

If the Habs decide or have decided to shop P.K around- it is not a bad
choice as long as the deal MAKES SENSE …

Here now are the ONLY top ten trades that Gauthier could make for P.K without being tied and shackled to the back of a Habs fan’s smart car.

10. To Vancouver for Kevin Bieska and Alexandre Burrows

9. To Calgary for Jerome Iginla , Ollie Jokinen and Jay Bowmeester.

8. To Edmonton for Thomas Eberle and Ryan Nugent – Hopkins

7. To Pittsburgh for Malkin

6. To LA for Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty

5. To Chicago for Duncan Keith and Viktor Stalberg

4. To San Jose for Dan Boyle and Ryan Clowe

3. To Detroit for Franzen and Conklin

2. To Minnesota for Koivu and Clutterbuck

And the number one trade …?

1. To Montreal for P.K Subban

Where Are They Now ? Part One

Logo used (1917-19, 1921-22)

Image via Wikipedia

Le Forum de Montreal has decided to look up some of the hockey players that are not playing hockey for the Montreal Canadiens anymore. Just to see  what they are up to …?

These players were once embedded deep in out hearts and were an intricate part of our daily lives. Why forget about them after all that …?

Some have been hard to find while others – as easy as stopping a Rick Green snapshot ! This is who we have discovered so far …

The Players

Andrei Kostitsyn

Andrei fell on hard times once he stopped skating for le bleu, blanc et rouge. Due to his monthly payments to the Russian mob – Andrei was forced to move in with his brother Sergei in Nashville. Following several fights related to his absolute disliking of country music – Andrei has been allocated to taking out the trash while he serves the remaining time in his house -arrest sentence. Unfortunatley for Andrei , his state-of-the-art toupee will have to wait due to financial reasons.

Lars Eller

Eller was able to grab a job at the local Tim Horton‘s due to his easy-going personality. The patrons that come and go at the drive through window – love hearing tales of his four-goal night. There are also rumors that Lars is making extra cash on the side selling t-shirts of his exploits as a Canadien. Eller ‘ s best customer is former Hab – Jaroslav Halak.

Scott Gomez

Scott did not have it easy once his playing career was over. He modeled hat ware for a while before landing a job in his native Alaska as a geography teacher for Sarah Palin. Word on the street is Palin gets a kick from rubbing Gomez’ head every morning for
’ good luck’ ! Mr. Gomez did get in a little trouble before he left the organization and was escorted out of the Bell Center for throwing pucks at Bob Gainey and yelling …” You ruined my career you defensive -minded snot …!”

Brian Gionta

The little American eased into his new position as an adviser for Brendan Gallagher – the Habs’s hot prospect. Brian spent a good three months helping Brendan shop for items that will help Gallagher in his NHL career. Items such as Dr. Sholl’s five inch skate inserts and  a book written by Yvon Cournyoyer titled ‘ How to survive in a land of giants ‘. Gionta is said to be pleased with his new role …

Max Pacioretty

Max had a very hard time adjusting to his life after hockey. He spent the better part of five years ‘ soul-searching’ in Tibet. Befriended by a little-known monk by the name of Tokyo Joe – Pacioretty found new purpose in his life teaching Joe and the rest of the monks how to play hockey. Max’s ‘ team ‘ went on to win a championship in the National Buddhist League and Pacioretty was honored for introducing padding that wrapped around the religious stanchions. No word if the Molsons are planning a court case …

David Desharnais

David was quickly recruited for work once he stopped playing. The Parti Quebecoise signed on the tiny frenchman to police the language laws in the NHL. Some of Desharnais’ duties ; making sure Vincent Lecavalier watches two hours of L’Anti-chambre every night, verifying that Gary Bettman manufacturers the proper use of the accent aigu on official documents and giving french lessons to all the Montreal Canadiens’ coaches- past and present. David also has a new video in stores ; ‘ Vive les Canadiens Libre !’

Rene Bourque

Bourque’s career ended almost as quickly as it started with the Habs. A good -looking dude, Rene caught on very quick as a dancer at Club 281 . He slipped rather eloquently into his new role as Tarzan; King of the Well-Endowed. The only downside to Bourque’s new job ? Getting suspended once a week for elbowing coworkers with bigger penises than him …

Stay tuned as we attempt to track down as many ex-Habs we can find …

Meanwhile – check out Kevin and the boys at Habs Eye on the Prize , the Hockey Writers and Knuckles Nilan. They will fill you in about STUFF !
