Monday Q Tip

Did you rake the leaves, wash the car and feed the dog?

Perhaps you raked the dog, washed the leaves and stuffed Kibbles n’ Bits into your car’s gas tank … ?

No worries – at least you did something this past weekend. That’s more than the;

St. Louis Blues

In case all your weekend tasks kept you away from your television / computer / buddy who is a hockey fan – the L.A. Kings swept the Blues in four games. If your are keeping track of such things – the Kings have now eliminated the number one and two seeds in the Western Conference.

The Kings had just a little more experience than St. Louis and combined with the loss of Halak, this series was as anti- climatic as discovering your new girlfriend is a he and adores playing horseshoes ( not that there is anything wrong with horseshoes ).

Blues’ goalie Elliot, the keeper of the season’s best goals against average – did not play bad. On occasion – when a team requires a win, a change between the pipes shakes things up. Adorns a team’s Christmas tree a different perspective as they gander back toward the crease. St. Louis had this advantage all season with the best goalie tandem in the NHL. Unfortunately, Halak picked the worse time to be run over by his teammate and injure his lower body. The series would have been different otherwise …

A Special Birthday

Yesterday, Denis Brodeur and his wife, spent the day wondering where the years have gone. For them, forty years appears like yesterday as they sat around reminiscing and watching the Devils take a 3 – 1 commanding lead against the Flyers.

Was it really their little boy? The one who cried when he first lost a game as a net minder in Atom hockey? Was it him standing in goals yesterday as the newly – turned, forty year old, winningest goaltender in hockey history? Saving his way to yet another Devils’ win and accumulating more wins and lore to pack in his suitcase for his eventual trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame?

It sure was M. et Madame Brodeur.

For one moment, do not think his teammates are not aware of these facts and are giving that little extra. The little Devils – all the way to the big ones … are going to help anyway they can to give Martin Brodeur the best birthday present in hockey.

Lord Stanley’s Cup!

Sentimental fans, even the ones who live under the Arch in St. Louis, must all be cheering for Brodeur and nostalgia … Sorry Mr. Quick – your time will come!

Speaking of goalies …

Since that fateful morning in 1985 when Flyers’ net minder Pelle Lindbergh drove his Porsche into a wall, his former position continues to ‘ haunt ‘ Philadelphia.

Ironically, as a young lad in Sweden – Lindbergh dreamed of playing for the Flyers and skating in his idol’s steps. His hero? Bernie Parent. Pelle’s parents going so far to bring the little Lindbergh to North America to see Parent play …

Pelle’s Porsche – Curse?

The Flyers, about now – wish either Lindbergh or Parent were in goals. Bryzgalov cannot make the ‘ big save ‘ and it is deflating the Flyers’ playoff balloon. The man whose fear lies ‘ in the woods ‘, is not out of the woods. He is not playing bad. He is playing much better than he did against Pittsburgh. Sadly, he cannot channel Patrick Roy of 1986 or Pelle Lindbergh of 1995 … Ouija board anyone?

This is not your Father’s hockey league …

It used to be, players, coaches and presumably their wives – all remained with one organization for minimum ten years. Unless, of course – your name happened to be Marc Bergevin and you played defense.

Now – everyone is moving so much, a GPS is required to keep up to date in your hockey pools.

The Hawks have announced, Norm ( no relation to the t.v. Star ) Maciver, a former assistant coach in Boston and most recently director of scouting in Chicago – has been appointed the new Ass’t G.M. in Chicago …

Maciver takes Montreal G.M. Bergevin’s place who held the same positions in Chicago.

Marc? I’ll be right there ….!

Now, it is reported Bergevin – is recruiting Leafs’ director of player personnel Rick Dudley to come and be his assistant in Montreal. Dudley has been with the Leafs since 2011. Dudley was the G.M. in Atlanta before his Toronto tenure and was replaced by former Hawks’ assistant G.M Cheveldae when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg. If this is the case – Dudley ( a former Buffalo Sabre ) would replace Larry Carriere ( another former Sabre ), as the assistant G.M. in Montreal.

Scotty Bowman was a coach in Montreal and the G.M. in Buffalo. He is presently a senior advisor in Chicago and his son is the G.M. Of the BlackHawks.

No news whether Denis Savard; a former BlackHawk / Habs’ player and a past coach in Chicago – is returning to Montreal or ending up in Buffalo.

Confused … ?

Go outside and get the Kibbles n’ Bits from the gas tank. Things will be more smooth after that …

Can you read Max ‘s mind?

Little Johnny Goes Shopping

If the Montreal Canadiens were steering the Titanic – a lot of lives would have been lost. In other words – the organization cannot see the obvious even if it were erected on the side of it’s home – Le Centre Bell.

Amazing is it not? Sell ten dollar hot – dogs? Not a problem. Sign Tomas ( marshmallow ) Kaberle to a multi- year deal while everyone around the league snickers at his every shift? Once again, for Le Club de Hockey Canadien – as easy as an Eric Weinrich hair cut! Try to sign a General Manager for the storied club? Suddenly it is like pulling teeth from a rabid squirrel – difficult, dirty and dangerous!

In any business, a properly – run business, a list of candidates should be made for the open position. Check. The Habs have done that or are in the process of doing so. Like the old guy in the red suit that comes each year; les Canadiens are making a list and hopefully – checking it twice.

The list with the names of potential G.M’s should be a piece of perfection. Not a dollar – store run. Not the type of list that a young Mom sends her eight- year- old to accomplish. If little Johnny was sent shopping for peanut butter, a jar with a picture of an elephant holding a toy car would fill the shelves at his home. The good stuff? Still at Wall mart being man – handled by Wall martians presumably.

Little Johnny should not be allowed to purchase a G.M. for les Canadiens de Montreal. If Molson allows such a thing, little Johnny will come home to the Bell Center and place some odd items on the shelf. Items such as …

Luc Robitaille.

Lucky Luke comes in an attractive package. Young enough to be hip and old enough to place square pegs in square holes. His label arrives in two languages yet his off – ice skills are delivered in one. The type of product our grandmothers displayed when visitors arrived. The good stuff? Hidden away for personal pleasure when the guests have left.

Ron Hextall

Little Johnny loves psychos! What little boy does not? Hextall is akin to a father of three buying a sportscar with two seats. A sportscar that ran over the family dog a few years back!Hextall may be quick to pull a punch with his competitive juices yet the unilingual sock-it- to-me will only do damage in the Montreal media. An enemy remains an enemy!

Guy Carbonneau

Like any child left unpunished, the same mistakes will be made over and over until the same result results in a bad result. Little Johnny requires guidance – or punishment if Guy is his guy! Carbonneau is too closely removed from the bitterness some feel towards Bob ( as in Gainey).

Larry Carriere

If Serge Savard and Geoff Molson are serious, covering all the bases is a crash course for Serge. An intro to the free – spending, cap – induced league of Bettman’s nations. In the course of the next few weeks, Savard must re – acquaint himself with the league and sort through the sheep and the wolves.

Savard and his intelligence, may be using his ‘quest for a G.M.’ job as a cover. A costume which allows an insight into the inner – working of the NHL circa 2012. A NHL that Savard is out of touch with.A new type of Hallowe’en parity.

If that is the case – is it any wonder Savard won a few Cups before the Titanic grabbed a few Oscars? It is obvious …

" Here's the plan! I become G.M. And you coach ...! "

Former Habs’ captain Butch Bouchard passed away this morning, April 14 – 2012. He was 92. Stay tuned in the course of the next few days for more information.

Savard as Vice President of Hockey Operations ? Grooming Roy ?

If a report from Radio – Canada is true , Serge Savard will be named as Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Montreal Canadiens.

If indeed this is correct – does that mean Patrick Roy is ‘ close but no cigar ‘ away from being a G. M in the National Hockey League ? More specifically – the Montreal Canadiens’ G.M ?

Welcome to the Twilight Zone … Otherwise known as day-to-day life in the soap opera that is Montreal hockey …

Submitted for your approval ;

- Serge Savard is too old to travel from city to city as most G.M ‘s do. As a G.M in training – Roy can coach the team and fill Savard’s worn – out shoes away from the Bell Center. Savard can accompany the squad when he chooses so . The rest of the time , Serge can smoke his cigars a la Glen Sather and ( a la Glen Sather ) trade the Scott Gomez‘ of the world away while seated in his guilded office on La Gauchetiere.

- When and if Saint Patrick decides to have a tantrum , his actions will not lead to a Price or Pacioretty being dispatched to Colorado. M. Savard and his around- the- block wisdom will pause the problem and parlay the solution for Roy’s future use. Savard a mentor to the maniacal.

Of course , this being the Twilight Zone and all – Savard has denied the report and Roy has dispelled rumors of an up – coming appointment as coach.

Two negatives make a positive … ?

Damphousse Out

Former Hab Vincent Damphousse has removed his name from the back of the vacant G.M ‘s sweater and Serge Savard was disappointed. A troubling turn of events ? A sign of a Savardian slip in his old age ?

Damphousse may be intelligent as all signs are indicative of such . To be named as G.M of the Habs in another place , another time – bet the house on it. Right now , after one of the most disastrous seasons since Malakhov went skiing on a bum knee ? Not a good idea for several reasons.

- Damphousse is in the middle of an upcoming domestic violence court case with his ex – wife.

- His experience in the NHLPA should not give him the key to the executive bathroom at the Bell Center.

- He sits with Mario Tremblay on RDS . Given how the Canadiens ‘ image has taken such a blow recently , the last thing the team needs is any reason for skeptics to be skeptics.

Damphousse has far too much baggage. A carry – on bag is enough for the new G.M . My cousin Vinnie should look on from the outside as a media guy right now or – if serious about his future aspirations , drop – out from the media . Kudos to Damphousse for withdrawing his name . Anti – kudos to Molson and Savard for considering it .

Not the best time for Damphousse

Let us hope , the Habs have not committed a foul by appointing Savard as the VP , if that be the case. In a way – Savard’s appointment may limit the number of candidates for G.M .

Some men want to be the boss – period. With Savard as V.P , it makes the former Hab defenceman the boss of all bosses. The new G.M will have an asterix next to his decisions. In all his memos regarding trades – it will have to read ;
