Scott Hartnell; His View

Straight from a Minnesota hockey camp with a bunch of kids from Philadelphia, Scott gives a player’s view of the CBA agreement, his career and Jagr …

Last season, the Flyers’ forward donated one thousand dollars to his foundation every time he fell down. The thirty year old Hartnell fell 200 times – that is a lot of money to a bunch of underprivaleged kids.

Hartnell is in his 11th season in the league and he attributes his best year last season to two factors; conditioning and teammates.

“Nutrition, fitness and playing with Giroux and Jagr. There is no question they are the three factors which led to my great season. I was a little upset Jagr is not coming back. It was really good playing with him. He brought so much experience to me and Claude, it was a real privilege to skate with him. “

As far as conditioning, Hartnell maintains there is no choice for the players. There are a lot of eighteen year old kids waiting to take his job and guys like him must stay in shape.

“Getting lucky and having great linemates doesn’t hurt though!” He laughs.

In shape is what the Flyers have to be according to Hartnell as he discusses the loss of Jagr, Pronger and the almost Flyer – Shea Weber.

“We have lost a few guys to injury on defence to start this season coming up and obviously it is disappointing not to see Weber come. Especially when he was so close. The guys will have to step it up but we have a great organization in Philly. We have to regroup.”

The Flyers may be strong yet there may not be a season if the owners and players cannot arrive at an agreement. Hartnell  remains optimistic…

“It was frustrating to receive the last offer of 46 percent revenue sharing from the owners. There are a lot of teams making money and our proposal ensures it goes to everyone. I’m sure the owners will see that. We will probably have to wait a few weeks for an answer but we ( the players ) are hopeful.”

If there is a lockout, this would be Bettman’s third work stoppage. Something that will not look good for the commissioner’s legacy. Another thirty or so  games lost, that would be almost two full seasons gone under Bettman’s watch …

“Gary is a smart man and he works for the owners. I don’t know what his legacy will be but you can’t blame him for trying to get the best deal possible. It is his job.” Says Scott.

During the previous lockout in 2005, the Regina,Saskatchewan native played in Norway. He enjoyed his time there yet says  there is nothing like playing in the NHL.

“It was a great life experience playing over there but in North America, you have so much love from the fans. They come out to see the goals, the hits, the fights – everything. Add that to the rivalries like us and Pittsburgh. There is nothing like it.”

Pretty solid stuff coming from a guy who  was voted number one on a list of best ‘beer guys’ in Philadelphia.

According to Scott – he pales next to Claude Giroux …

‘Off the record’ of course!

Tuesday Tid-bits ( not to be confused with TimBits )

All good things must come to an end – which does not explain why the Montreal Canadiens‘ season will conclude three games from now …

Add Carey Price to the list of concusses and you have a Montreal club that will lead the league in man games lost to injury ( Good thing Kaberle is not a man or it would be more). No excuses yet one must wonder a little bit if the Canadiens remained healthy , would Gauthier still be sitting at his bleu , blanc et rouge desk in Vermont instead of the oaken one he is hiding under ?

Enough about ghosts…

In Tampa last night – Alex Ovechkin was outplayed once more by another team’s sniper. This time it was Steve Stamkos who out – rushed the Russian. Stamkos netted his 57th and 58th goal of the season as the Bolts zapped the Capitals chances of nailing down the eight and final playoff spot in the East for another game or two. Since Ovechkin is best buddies with Markov – wouldn’t it be nice to see Alexander the Great resurrect his career in Montreal ? Just sayin …

Following the fiasco in Philly , Dan Bylsma‘s gotta be a bit worried if the Flyers and Pens meet in the playoffs.

First – Mike Milbury said that Bylsma should ‘ lift up his skirt ‘ and go after Philly coach Laviolette . Second – the Flyers’are kinda mad that Briere is out of the line – up , possibly for the beginning of the first round thanks to a last minute hit by Vitale. Sid the Kid would be the prime target of the Flyers , especially if Mike Milbury’s words are heard ;

“So you know, Crosby gets cross-checked, big whoop. He said after he came back from his 35th concussion, ‘I’m not going to do this anymore, I’m not going to get into this scrums, I’m going to stay away from that stuff.’ He couldn’t help himself because there’s a little punk in Crosby. He’s not the perfect gentleman. He’s not the sweet kid you see in interviews with his hat pulled down over his eyes. I’d say screw him, hit him,

” How old is Milbury and can he still skate …?” The Flyers must be wondering …

If the Florida Panthers beat the Jets on Tuesday , they can clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2000. Lucky for the Panthers and their fans – Jeffrey Loria and David Samson can be tossed on the ice like the big rats they are …

Heard from a friend dep’t ; Dion Phaneuf was vacationing with girlfriend Elissa Cuthbert last year(must have been early April ) in Cancun. My buddy started talking to Cuthbert about Montreal since she is from the city. The pair were laughing and joking when Phaneuf got a little into my pal’s face ; ” Do you know who I am … And who are you ?” Screamed Phaneuf. ” I make more money than everyone here !” It did not take long before Phaneuf was asked to leave . No word if my buddy got sloppy seconds …

Sex, Lies and Hockey Tape – Part Four

What’s happening in Tampa …?

Golden boy Guy Boucher’s star is fading fast apparently. Is it because of the debacle that took place when the Flyers mocked Boucher’s trap and refused to move the puck or is Boucher suffering from a sophomore jinx ? Losers of their past five games – Tampa’s high-scoring stars are above only the lowly Islanders and Hurricanes in points. Over-payed and over-estimated Lecavalier is the worst captain since Stubing on the Love Boat. Stamkos and St Louis cannot carry the team on their backs and if Bergeron was not a lethal point-getter on the powerplay – where would Tampa be right now …

Jacques Martin was the GM and coach in Florida. The team , under his tutelage – hovered close to the .500 mark and were playing with the final eight spot in the Eastern division. Sound familiar …? The team started out well and Dale Tallon’s master plan is sound yet it will take a while to sweep Martin’s doings away from the crease. Oh well – the players can go swimming and check out the girls in their bikinis after a loss. Fortunately for Florida – the losses are far and few between …can it keep going ? Stay tuned …

Sex , Lies and Hockey Tape – Part Two

The Pittsburgh Penguins were one and a half players away from a Stanley Cup one month ago . One half because Malkin was in and out of the line-up and Crosby was suffering from menopause er …post concussion symptoms. Now the dynamic duo have returned and the Penguins are favored to win a Cup. They are well coached, experienced and have solid goaltending. The only thing stopping them are Sid the Kid’s sporadic tantrums and the Boston  Bruins. The Pens must get tough if they stand a chance of beating the Bean-town Bullies.

Les Sabres de Buffalo sont pas la ! When Miller was decked by Milan Lucic and no one on the Sabres came to his immediate defence – the non – action sent a message to the rest of the NHL. Not a good one. The Sabres told everyone that they are a bunch of spineless skaters. Miller was already suffering and his absence was a blessing. Expect Miller to be traded before the trading deadline as he has fallen out of favor with everyone, including Lucic. Lindy Ruff may also be on the way out. He has survived a long time in Buffalo yet every dog has his day. Buffalo may want to pay attention to the availabilty of Jacques Martin. Martin’s system is tailor-made for the Sabre personnel

The more things change – the more they stay the same. Especially in Philly. The curse of Pelle Lindbergh appears intact . Ken Dryden, Tretiak and the legendary Bernie Parent would all be getting the shakes if they guarded the net in the city of Brotherly love. Pronger is getting old ( hence the injuries ) and the only player that shines on a nightly basis is Claude Giroux. Unfortunately the Flyers forward cannot win a championship by himself. The team should exercise the Lindbergh demon by setting Bobby Clarke on fire on the steps where Rocky ran. Just once though – please no more sequels.

( Sorry – the old logo is nicer ). The Jets are kinda surprising everyone except the fans in Atlanta. The old / new team is playing well yet without all the support from the hockey-mad province – the Jets would probably be win less. If the Jets were smart , they would give Lou Lamiorello a call and try to get Kovalchuk back. A franchise player is Canada would be what the doctor ordered in Winter-peg.

Stay tuned for more – in the meantime , check out the cheerleaders…!

Habs Throw Party at the Morgue

Dead bodies were piling up everywhere on the airwaves …

Jacque Martin , Pierre Gauthier , Erik Cole and Scott Gomez were sentenced to death. To be buried many places. Next to Ghadafi ; under Le Centre Bell and a burial at sea for Mr. Gauthier. When all was said and done – it was the Habs’ assistant coach , Perry Pearn , who walked the plank.

Pearn - A Pirate ?

Someone – I suppose , should pay for the Canadiens worst start on home ice in franchise history. Why Pearn and not Martin? Time will tell. One day ( presumably when George Laraque writes another book ), all information regarding the ‘ behind-the -scenes ‘ scene that took place 90 minutes before yesterday’s game will come to the forefront.

You Gotta Move Like Jagr …

Ten minutes into the game against Kate Smith’s Flyers , all indications of a Hab team playing in turmoil seemed true. The Pronger-less Flyers appeared like Men to the impish ‘mice ‘ in the Canadiens line-up. The Habs chased the Flyers in their own zone, in neutral territory and in the other end of the ice. Philadelphia were vultures and Les Habitants a wounded animal – laying on a desert landscape . The Flyers and the Habs knew it was a matter of time before the end was near. The Canadiens were the keystone cops and the entire game would be written in the Daily Bugle.

Jaromir Jagr – fresh from Siberia ( literally ), took a beautiful pass from Carle at 10:43 of the first period and buried the puck past Carey Price. Jagr gave his trademark salute and all indications pointed towards the floodgates being opened . Another loss seemed imminent for the Habs and their net minder. Price would have to wait to reach his 100th win in the NHL. Another salute seemed real. Then , something funny happened away from the Forum …

Philadelphia did not want to win. They displayed their indifference by hitting not one – two goal posts before the first 20 minutes were up. Simmons’ chance the most apparent as he had time and space to put an easy goal past Price. The Flyers soon learned that if you play with fire – you will burn your chances. With three seconds left in the initial frame and Montreal on a power play – Yannick Weber blasted a shot from the point and in a wink of Patrick Roy’s eye , the score was tied heading to the middle period.

Maybe there is something in the Habs’ water bottles ? Perhaps being tied with a good team on the tails of a losing skid lit the team’s spirits …? Whatever the recipe – Martin must bottle it and feed it intravenously to his players every night.

The Habs came out like their Flyin’ French predecessors. Despite messing up on a 3 on 1 that came across as a bad Marx Brothers skit ( and in turn – making Cammalleri appear selfish ), Montreal kept coming. Since the start of the season – the Habs have not been lucky. Pucks have not bounced their way and the injury bug has taken it’s toll. Last night – the ghosts of the club’s past were on hand to lend a stick.

Andrei Kostistyn started the party mid-way through the period. A scramble around Philly’s net ended with the puck flying in various directions. Thankfully for Andrei and the Habs – the final direction was the back of the net as the disc bounced off the Belarusian’s leg. Max Pacioretty ( a game time decision due to pulled ligaments in his wrist), proved that after suffering a broken vertebrae last season – nothing will stop him now. He received the gift of the night when his teammate , Josh Gorges fired a shot at the Flyers’ net minder Bryzgalov . The puck went off his pads and landed directly on Max’s stick. An easy goal for number 67 and in the space of two minutes , it was 3-1 for a Canadien team looking for only it’s second win in eight games.

Nervous Nellies

If a fan at home , a fan at the game , Jacques Martin or any of his players said they were not nervous heading into the final segment – they would all be liars. A 3- 1 lead for a team that three times let the Toronto Maple Leafs catch-up is minimal against a much better Flyer squad. If the Habs were to win – they needed their veterans and Carey Price to step -up.

Erik Cole played the best game of his Canadien career last night. He demonstrated speed , skill and determination on every shift. He bullied his way to

Pronger - hit in face !

scoring chances for himself and teammates. Price – who has struggled at times so far , also played complete for sixty minutes. By far – his best outing this season. Together along with another goal from Max ‘ Patches ‘ Pacioretty and Mike Cammalleri – the Montreal Canadiens made a victory seem easy against a bigger and stronger Philadelphia team.

On occasion, with backs to the wall – a person or a team can reach deep within and come out on top. It does not mean the Canadiens are out of the woods. Their defencemen are having a hard time with the transition game. The forwards are as inconsistent as Marlon Brando was in choosing his movie roles. Last night proved part luck , part character and part chance. Chance in the fact they did not have to put up with Chris Pronger. A player that instills fear in his own zone. A player with a mean streak.

A player that can pile dead bodies very high …

**************************************************

Please see what Knuckles has to say about the game ! He also has a great story about a dog .

Habs are in Beantown tonight. It will be the first game that Pacioretty faces the criminal Chara. Both squads are not playing well with Boston being slightly above in the standings. Still – it is Montreal – Boston !!!!!
